Chapter 1 - Basic Information about Detox Diet
Detoxification diet, or also known as Detox Diet
, is a special dietary plan that involves the neutralization of toxins from the body. Toxins potentially cause damages in the body tissues, including waste products from regular cell activities like homocysteine, lactic acid and ammonia.
Although the term detox
is often perceived as a special treatment for drug and alcohol dependence, the said term also refers to some methods of eliminating dietary and environmental toxins in the body.
There are many kinds of detox diet recommended by experts. In general, the diet is done in a short-term basis but:
• Helps minimize the amount of food chemicals ingested by organic food consumption
• Gives emphasis on foods that have loads of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants the body needs for proper detoxification.
Studies show that majority of the chemicals we ingest everyday (through air, water and food) can be stored into fat cells from the body. The toxins are seen in the presence of antibiotics, pesticides and unnecessary hormones brought by food packaging, additives, pollution and even cigarette smoke. Insufficient nutrients may impair our body’s natural ability to eliminate toxins, which further results to the build-up of fat cells.

Detox Foods to Include in Your Diet
In order to make a meal plan that works, it is important that you learn about the types of food that will do you good. The rule of thumb is to indulge in fruits and vegetables. Get a load of fiber as such encourages bowel movement. Such foods include leafy greens and whole vegetables, gluten free grains and brown rice, lentils, beans, seeds, berries, whole fruits, coconut oil, green tea, apple cider vinegar, stevia, organic turkey and chicken and wild fish among others. Keep this in mind when planning your meals.
Kinds of Foods Not Allowed to Eat
During detox alcohol is a big no-no. Fast foods, fatty foods and pre-packaged foods should also be avoided. You should also say goodbye to coffee, soda, pork, beef, wheat, gluten, soy, processed sugar, corn oil, whey protein and the like.
Side Effects
Headache is one of the most common side effects during the first two weeks of detoxification. This often occurs due to caffeine withdrawal. In line with this, medical practitioners suggest detox diet beginners to eliminate their coffee or cola intake. Additionally, some people begin their detox diet by taking some time off from work or during weekends.
Other side effects of the diet are constipation and diarrhea. When not cured immediately, this can lead to electrolyte loss and dehydration. Constipation happens when you keep on consuming fiber-enriched foods without any fluid intake. Thus, it is very important that you should have a glass of water or juice between meals. If detoxification reached longer periods, it may likely result
