The most uncomfortable person in the room is the nigga who knows he’s right.

Prologue
Sometimes, I wonder if everything was my fault.
As I return from yet another industry party, I take off the godforsaken red bottoms that have cursed me the entire night and slide right into my cheap Payless house slippers that welcome me home like an old friend.
I remove my wig and fluff out what’s left of the teeny-weeny Afro on top of my head, as it’s also screaming at me for suffocating her under that hot, synthetic mess.
The too-tight slacks are removed along with the even-tighter buttoned-down dress shirt and slip into my favorite yellow Fresh Nectar shirt and workout shorts. I walk over to the kitchen, pour a glass of the cheap wine I got from the grocery store, and relax. Or at least attempt to.
Dave East’s booming voice greets me as I turn on the radio. It’s a sign that I will carefully avoid. I switch it to another station and hear the soulful sounds of The Doobie Brothers. Yep, the universe doesn’t want me to be great tonight.
Both artists, despite how different they are from each other, remind me of him. His love. His energy. His protection. His amazing dick. His skillful tongue. And my favorite part of him? His beautiful heart.
I decide to just turn everything off. I need to be alone in my thoughts.
The last several months of my life has been a whirlwind and it took me forever and a day to erase the thing that almost ruined me to build myself back up to being a credible journalist, though I can honestly say that’s a polite way of saying gossip reporter.
My cell phone rings and I glance at who’s calling me. I really don’t want to talk to her and I know the only reason she’s calling me because she was at the fundraiser as well tonight and she wants the inside scoop of one of the world’s most wealthiest and powerful families.
I also know I can’t avoid her forever so I reluctantly pick up my phone to talk. Yes, Laura?
Laura Buchanan is the queen bitch of all queen bitches at the SHE television network. I work under her as a celebrity correspondent on the Sista Gal talk show, with three other women.
Laura is a force to be reckoned with. She earned her way by hard work, backstabbing, and fucking whoever she could to acquire the top spot. She’s one of those women you don’t know if you hate her or you admire her.
She constantly serves Robin Givens Boomerang tease. "Hi, Ariana! How are you doing, dahling?"
I roll my eyes and bit my sigh. Laura has that soothing voice one would hear on a TV commercial advertising for maxi pads and telling the consumer it’s for those days when Mother Nature takes over your life.
No wonder I always feel like shit after I talk to her.
She wants something and she’s laying it on thick so she can get it. I’m doing well. How may I help you?
I cut to the chase, not even wanting to know how she’s doing because I already know what she’s going to say.
I saw you at the fundraiser tonight,
she pauses for a beat, I didn’t know you were invited.
Yeah, I was. It was a last-minute invite.
Someone anonymous sent me the invite in the mail and when I confirmed my attendance a day later, I found out I was put on the VIP list. I never did meet the anonymous person who sent it to me, though I think my ex might have played a role in it.
It doesn’t make any sense. If my ex wanted me at the fundraiser, he made sure not to speak to me at all.
Good, good.
She pauses for another beat. I know she’s up to something because she never takes this many pauses. You were close to Soul Ellison at one point, weren’t you?
The hairs on my skin prickled. I let out another sigh, but this one is out of frustration and regret. The only man who could bring me to my knees in every which way. My Soul. I shake the memory out of my head and focus on the conversation. Not anymore.
Oh, okay.
Her answer doesn’t sound like she’s willing to accept what I just told her. I thought you two still talked?
My heart burns with regret and I shake my head. I haven’t spoken to Soul in nearly two years.
Briana Gooding’s fundraiser was a success and there’s no doubt she’ll win this upcoming election. The real story, however, was not the appearance of the wealthiest and most-powerful families
It wasn’t the sudden appearance of the newest Ellison as she arrived in the middle of the women’s restroom.
It wasn’t all of the celebrities schmoozing with each other trying to get selfies and photo ops at every turn.
It was the thick, suffocating tension between me and my ex.
I’d successfully avoided him all night like a president who doesn’t want to be professional. I made sure we were nowhere near each other. In fact, I didn’t even bother talking to any member of the Ellison’s for that very purpose. If one of them
