    Chapter One

Dario Jacobs looked out the bus windows. His heart raced as he caught sight of one of Trent’s men. The balding guy in the cheap black suit must have spotted him because he started racing towards his direction. The guy looked pissed, his pupils bright yellow. Dario swore he caught sight of fangs.

He stared at those teeth, knowing a quick, merciful death probably wasn’t what Trent had in mind for him. No, Trent would take his time, the same way he did with Dennis. Please, move, he silently willed. He checked his watch. The bus should have left two minutes ago. The bald guy began to pull something from his jacket. Something metallic. A gun?

    Oh God.

The bus doors closed with a hiss. The bus lurched into sudden motion, much to his relief. Dario let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding.

He willed his hands to stop shaking. Dario was in the clear, for now at least. He still couldn’t get the gruesome image of Dennis’s mangled body out of his head. Dario took out his headphones, plugged it into his phone and played the first playlist he found.

Not good. Classic rock only reminded him of his older brother.

Dennis had always listened to the classic rock station in their crummy apartment, mostly because their old radio could only get that station. Tears hovered in the corner of his eyes, but he hastily wiped them away. The bus was half full, and no one seemed to pay him any notice. Good, because right now, all Dario wanted to do was become invisible.

Why were you such a goddamn fool, Dennis? he whispered angrily.

Dario had thought Dennis really got his shit together, had conquered rehab and had a decent job at the gas station. Their parents had died in a car accident when he was twelve. Dennis was only eighteen then, barely an adult, and chose to raise him instead of surrendering him to foster care.

Then Dennis became addicted to meth. It was his turn to support his brother, to make sure Dennis got back on the right track. Dario owed it to Dennis, who didn’t even finish high school because he’d been too busy working two jobs to support them both.

Now look at where he was. Dennis was dead, murdered, and Dario couldn’t even go to the local police. Trent Farley, the local werewolf mob boss his brother owed money to, had the cops in his pocket.

What would possess Dennis to even borrow money from them? He didn’t know. Dario would never get his answers now that Dennis was dead.

A sob caught in his throat. This past year had been rough on them both. Dennis had just gotten out of rehab while he struggled to pay the bills. A month ago, Dennis bought a new sports car and told him he’d take care of that month’s bills. Dario had been so exhausted from all the shifts he’d pulled at the café that he didn’t think to question where Dennis got all that cash.

His phone rang, and he jumped in his seat. Trent knew his number. He really should change his phone when he arrived at Rocher City. Dario hesitated, then relaxed, seeing the agency’s number flashing across the screen.

He answered the call. Hey, Mike. I’m on my way to Rocher City right now. I’ll be there in, like, two hours.

Good. Mr. Prince is expecting you. He sent over a driver to pick you up at the bus station, Mike said.

    Thanks Mike.

By sheer luck, Dario discovered Perfect Match online after his brother got that fancy new car. He applied after getting drunk one night, dreading to come to work the next day because he hadn’t been feeling well. He didn’t even know matchmaking agencies still existed, but apparently the agency catered to rich shifters who didn’t want to go through the hassle of finding their own mates.

From what he understood from Mike, Perfect Match catered to a niche market. Usually, shifters kept to their side of their fence and humans to theirs, but there were few exceptions—those who wanted some excitement in their lives and mix things up.

When Mike called him back, he didn’t expect to be contacted so soon. He’d been putting off Mike’s calls and messages, until he’d reached out to Mike again today, after finding Dennis’s corpse in their apartment. Mike had been surprised but didn’t ask him any more questions, merely gave him an address and the name of his new mate.

Even a guy from a small town like Olivia knew about Von Prince, billionaire werejaguar and one of the world’s most eligible bachelors. Why a guy like Prince would go through a matchmaking agency, he didn’t know.

Mike had outlined his duties. Prince wanted a pretend mate, and Mike made it clear he’d only be acting as Prince’s official boyfriend, nothing else.

Prince didn’t even want sex, and he’d get his own separate room in Prince’s penthouse suite. Well and good. He could do that. Pretend to be Prince’s latest boyfriend and even if Trent saw his name in the news, surely a local mobster would be afraid to go after a guy like Prince, who had a ruthless reputation. Rumor had it, Prince hired ex-special shifter forces for his personal security.

He knew agreeing to be Prince’s pretend mate might only be a temporary measure. Who knew? Maybe Prince liked to hire guys to play his
