A.B. Deos
I was born in Sydney, Australia, before the internet age, and grew up with an appreciation of the rich history of my Greek heritage. I was also gay, but never ashamed of it, and kept that part of my life hidden since it was my own business. .I had reached a point in my life where I started writing down my experiences, a kind of therapy to let things out. The result was a memoir, and after the fifth & final draft, it has been one of the thrills of my life to first see the cover of my first book, IN LOVE I TRUST, jump off the screen from Amazon’s website. One of my passions is my love for ‘Star Trek’. The ideals of a hopeful & inclusive future. I believe in the simplicity of life, not the exaggerated. I use a pen name, and I’m not a fan of social media. I prefer an author having an air of mystery about them. Live Long & Prosper, A.B. Deos

CHOICES
Hey, it’s Tom.
After knocking repeatedly on my boyfriend’s apartment door, without a response, I now thought best to spoil the surprise and reassure him it was just me. The sound of approaching footsteps on the other side of the door prompted a smile on my face in response. The door finally opened but only enough for the side of John’s face to peak through the gap. His right eye looked down, avoiding direct contact with me.
Dude, let me in, it’s been too long since I’ve held you!
I hadn’t seen John in a few days as I had been visiting family friends up north. I had returned to Sydney a day earlier, hence the unexpected visit. I had missed him, and at some point I hoped that we too would go away together somewhere.
John started coughing, and then clearing his throat. He was leaning his body against the back of the door as one of his hands rested on the door knob on my side. I still sensed no excitement from him at my return, but that would be asking for a lot. In the few months we had been dating I found he wasn’t animated with his feelings, both in public & private, but I liked his reserved nature, except when he retreated too far into himself and shut me out completely.
Tom, wish you had rang, would have saved yourself the trip...not feeling well right now.
Come on, let me in. I’ll look after you.
I was sounding playful, but so anxious to want to be rolling around in bed naked with my man. However, if he was indeed sick then I couldn’t leave his side now, that wasn’t in my nature.
It’s really not a good time now...not now, Tom.
Fuck his protests, it was time to be supportive. I brought my hands up against the door and applied pressure against the wood, forcing John off balance and having to take steps backwards.
No, not now...not a good time.
I moved past him and charged like a conquering hero into the hallway. Expecting him to be alone I was confronted with two other men in his living room.
Hi,
I managed to say out loud, feeling awkward now. Turning around, I was about to ask John who his guests were, but now I saw all of his face, including the bruising that was out of sight earlier.
Dude, what happened?
I asked point blank.
Standing in the sun lit room I looked at John up & down, inspecting him for other injuries. The surprise was shocking, and the image of the two strangers in his apartment just added to the questions now flooding my mind. Overreacting to situations in my youth, at least age had tempered my instincts to seek more information before leaping, but here I didn’t know enough to judge yet.
It’s nothing, I slipped on the floor, last night, should have been more careful,
John said, looking past me towards his guests.
Hi, I’m Matt, I’m friends with John,
came a voice behind me, prompting me to turn around again. Matt seemed friendly enough, making eye contact, holding his hands out in an open gesture as he sat back in a relaxed position on one of the couches. The other guy however, had his arms crossed against his chest and kept looking away from John & me, like the sight of us
