48 Hour Photography Challenge - Edinburgh - Tom S-N
What Is the ‘48 Hour Photography Challenge’?
The ‘48 Hour Photography Challenge’ will be a series of eBooks produced on a monthly basis (dependent on the distance between cities), which will see me travel to different European locations with an aim of capturing them in a challenging manner.
As a photographer, I constantly like to challenge myself and over the years I have travelled the world as a soldier but haven’t had the opportunity to travel as much as I would like with my photography. I have recently come back from a trip to Singapore and Bali, carrying minimal kit and managing to capture some magnificent imagery. I loved every minute of it.
The ‘48 Hour Photography Challenge’ is not only a way to test myself by venturing off to different cities and capturing imagery for myself, but also to show other professional and aspiring photographers what can be done with minimal kit, research and time. Whenever people go to a city, the first thing they generally do is Google iconic places and run straight off to capture them. What they don’t realize is their fixation has taken them past plenty of unexplored photographic opportunities.
As a photographer, I don’t limit myself to one avenue of photography. I believe knowing the fundamentals of many avenues such as studio portraiture, environmental portraiture, sports, street and weddings to name a few gives you a more rounded knowledge base in your chosen category. For me - and anyone who knows me will tell you - I love environmental portraits and as a photographer this is the avenue I have always most enjoyed. Although the majority of my personal work is portraiture, I still ensure I venture out and capture other aspects in order to stay current and to progress as a photographer.
There are plenty of photographers out there that stick to one area of interest and they are extremely good at what they do. In order to get to where they are it will have taken years harnessing their skills, not only in their current field but in many others until they found their calling. So, my reasoning behind this book is to hopefully give others a format and inspiration to get out there, think on their feet and harness their photography in a variety of forms.
––––––––
As with any challenge I have laid out a few fundamental rules and they are as follows:
1) I have 48 hours from arriving at my chosen city to complete the challenge.
2) I must capture and produce 48 images.
3) I am not allowed to conduct any research until I arrive at my chosen city and the 48-hour countdown begins.
4) The imagery I produce must incorporate some key aspects of the city, but not your usual landscape/cityscape imagery (think outside the box).
5) My imagery must consist of and incorporate the following aspects of photography: street, landscapes, environmental portraits in both daytime and night time and one other of my choice which will be location dependent.
6) All kit and equipment to be used must fit in one bag.
––––––––
Sounds pretty easy right? Now imagine arriving at a city you have never been to before. You don’t know anyone, you don’t know the language and for your entire 48 hour allocated time period, the forecast is heavy
