Dale T. Phillips

A lifelong student of mysteries, Maine, and the martial arts, Dale T. Phillips has combined all of these into the Zack Taylor series. His travels and background allow him to paint a compelling picture of a man with a mission, but one at odds with himself and his new environment. A longtime follower of mystery fiction, the author has crafted a hero in the mold of Travis McGee, Doc Ford, and John Cain, a moral man at heart who finds himself faced with difficult choices in a dangerous world. But Maine is different from the mean, big-city streets of New York, Boston, or L.A., and Zack must learn quickly if he is to survive. Dale studied writing with Stephen King, and has published over 70 short stories, non-fiction, and more. He has appeared on stage, television (including Jeopardy), and in an independent feature film. He co-wrote and acted in a short political satire film. He has traveled to all 50 states, Mexico, Canada, and through Europe. He can be found at www.daletphillips.com

    DEDICATION

To the storytellers who toil in obscurity, for the love of the tale

    CONTENTS

    Foreword

Afew years ago, the first Crooked Paths was published, a collection of five mystery and crime stories. It has been well-received, so here are more tales in that vein, further chronicles of those who walk a crooked path, and so very often pay a terrible price for what they do.

Knife Edge is an homage to strong women and the iconic mountain in my home state of Maine, the looming Katahdin, which rises from the plain as one drives north up Interstate 95. It is magnificent, and inspirational. And more than a little scary.

Crocodile Smile is a lovely tale of determination and planning and revenge, while being clever about the methodology. I'm always wondering about rapacious humans and how they never outgrow their reptilian brain.

Change of Attitude is one of the tales of a series of stories from The Bar Sinister, a too-well-connected establishment where one can find many things. Some quite unexpected.

The Atomic Kid is a straight homage to the pulps of the 30's and 40's, with tough guys and fixed fights. But it gets a new twist with the end of World War II, and the dawning of a new age. But some values are forever.

Ground Swell is a story in another series, tales inspired by the paintings of Edward Hopper, whose noirish, iconic depictions of American life showed a darkness, an undercurrent of feeling that can be downright terrifying. This particular work is one of his lightest, and most seemingly carefree, but my twisted little mind imagines that the boat ride didn't quite turn out all sunny and fun. Astute readers will see echoes of The Great Gatsby, a wonderful study in the lives of the idle and selfish rich.

Many thanks go out to Over My Dead Body, an online work that originally published two of these stories, and other of mine. It is a fine place for quality fiction, so check it out: http://www.overmydeadbody.com/

More thanks go out to my editors, who helped shape these stories into better things.

If you like the writing or tone of these stories and would like to tackle something longer, I’ve written the Zack Taylor mystery series, starting with "A Memory of Grief and continuing on to A Shadow on the Wall, and the soon-to-be-published A Certain Slant of Light."

IF YOU LIKE THESE TALES, please check out other titles. And thanks for reading.

THAT IS ONE BIG MOUNTAIN, said Julie, looking out through the windshield.

Yup. Almost a mile high, replied Marissa, not taking her eyes from the road as she drove.

    What’s ‘Katahdin’ mean, anyway?

I think it means ‘mountain.’ So if you say Mount Katahdin, the official name, you’re saying Mount Mountain.

    They both laughed.

Julie studied the shape in the distance. It kind of rises from the landscape the way Ayers Rock does in Australia.

Marissa glanced at her, and Julie blushed. No, I haven’t been there, obviously. I’ve only seen it in pictures. But someday.
