Introduction
Victory
When I think of the word victory, the movie Chariots of Fire comes to mind. Chariots of Fire is a beautiful and extraordinary film that focuses on the lives of two Olympic athletes – Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams – in their pursuit of excellence to win their respective running events in the 1924 Olympics. I mention this movie and I mention the word victory, because victory is something that most of us are trying to achieve in our lives. The word victory does not translate exactly to the definition of success, however. In fact, typically, victory is synonymous with the idea of overcoming a challenge to achieve a desired result. I feel that the word victory, as opposed to success, is more applicable and appropriate in today’s society, particularly as we have to overcome self-doubts, negative voices, and other obstacles to achieve our dreams and goals. Furthermore, sometimes we put too much pressure on ourselves to be successful,
but truly we should define what success means to each and every one of us. This is why I prefer to consider each accomplished goal, whatever it may be, to instead be defined as a victory; it is somehow much more personal that way and represents the truth – that we have to overcome something in the process of achieving it.
This book is for anyone interested in achieving personal victory – whether you are a professional, college student, recent graduate preparing to enter the workforce, someone just starting a new career, or an individual aspiring to pursue a particular dream. In fact, the principles discussed in this book may help anyone at any stage of his or her life; I have personally helped individuals in all of the aforementioned situations using the principles of this book.
In terms of young adults - entering the workforce and spending those first few years in the real world
can be a very daunting time, as I recall from not very long ago. Even after five to ten years, a career can become demotivating. In other cases, people might be contemplating on giving up on a dream; they need a boost in motivation at a particular juncture of their lives. I hope that this book may help individuals in all of those situations. I also hope that I can help all my readers – regardless of their situation in life – to achieve their dreams.
Why Read This Book?
This book explains the value of using a system for personal victory; however, the simple tenets of this system consist of having not only a mindset and goals for victory, but also tools and strategies for overcoming one’s difficulties and challenges, particularly with people. Often our approach with others, especially with those who condescend or try to limit our success (knowingly or not – I do not believe most people are actually aware of the impact of their words), is what holds us back. We either allow ourselves to accept the negative things spoken over us or we use a lot of energy in fighting them (most often in our minds), thereby losing traction on our victories simply because we are spending time and effort on those things instead of on our goals.
Instead of allowing the negative words spoken over us to come to pass, I have found that staying resolved to one’s system of victory while employing a spirit of compassion to others – even those who hurt us – are critical aspects of achieving one’s goals and dreams. That spirit of compassion can carry us through those difficulties and help soften the pain and impact of our hurt. You will gain a different perspective for why things happen to you as you read through the next chapters and will be more geared for success as a result.
