About this ebook

It is often said that our world resides in a small seed. In the same way, a small seed has a whole tree inside it. These trees and plants are our first mothers. Their leaves, flowers, roots, fruits and seeds are a part of our daily diet and provide us nutrition. Without these trees our world is incomplete. They provide us with not only food but also provide us with oxygen. They absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. They also provide shade to the animals and home to the birds. Some plants are also used for medicines mostly herbs. Neem is a good example of medicine. The roots, leaves, seeds and the bark of the Neem tree all are used to make medicines. In Mahatma Buddha’s words, ‘The trees are a magical being in this world. They provide shade to all even to those who come with axes to cut them down.’

There are great reserves of Ocean waters on the earth. Around 97 percent of total water is found in the oceans and simultaneously 70 percent of the earth’s area is covered with Oceans. World’s generally all sea’s, mountains, lakes and the snow and water emerging from the mountains, all get accumulated and meet in the oceans. No such Oceans are found on any other planet. Oceans have their own whole world filled with mysteries and diffusion. Every being of the ocean is there to create amusement in us. In spite of so many researches, yet several mysteries of the oceans remain unsolved.

Rivers and lakes are too very important to us and our environment as they provide us with fresh and clean water. Rivers flow from a number of origins. These origins can be lakes and mountains. Almost every river meets another river or ocean at the end of its journey. The river which meets the main river is called the tributary. From thousands of years rivers have been playing an important role in the lives of human beings and this is the reason why many important towns and cities are located on the banks of the rivers.

We have given a brief detail of these life-giving trees, oceans, rivers and lakes in this book.

    1. Trees and Plants

Trees and plants have a fixed average height of the trunk and then arise the branches and the leaves. Trees have an average height between 3 to 6 meters. Mostly the width of the trees is 30 cm. The trees which are short height and have a number of branches are called bushes. Some trees have leaves and trunk but not branches. In this category, date palm is included and it is most appropriate to call them bushes than trees. Some trees have thorns in place of leaves like a cactus. This depends on environmental conditions. Researchers consider Fern also as a tree of this category. The major parts of the trees are as follows-

    Roots

These can be found under the ground. They provide anchorage to the tree or plant. They extract water and mineral salts from the ground and send them upwards towards the tree. Some trees have a main root called the Tap Root which gives out smaller roots called Lateral roots. Some have roots coming out in clusters and are called Fibrous Roots while some have roots coming out from the leaves.

    Trunk

The trunk separates the roots from the main tree. It transports the mineral salts and water to the different parts of the tree from the roots. The trunk contains tissues. It grows each year. They grow better in the tropical areas while in the other areas they have a period in which they grow. This season is called the flowering season.

The trunk is made of two kinds of tissues called Phloem and Xylem. These tissues also grow into branches. The Xylem tissues transport the water and mineral salts to the different parts of the tree. The Phloem tissues take part in the process of photosynthesis. According to the types of trunks, the trees can be of two types:

Exogenous Trees are the common type found trees. In this type new branches grow and the tree’s height increase.

Indigenous Trees are found in scarcity. They can be found in Date Palm and Dragon Tree. In this tree, only the trunk grows while the rest of the tree remains the same.

    Leaves

Leaves are an important part of the plant. They take part in the process like Photosynthesis, Respiration and Transpiration which are important for the plant. Some trees shed their leaves once a year and are called Tropical Deciduous Trees. They shed their leaves in the autumn season only. Some trees remain evergreen through the year and are called Evergreen Trees. They shed a few leaves at a time and hence appear evergreen.

    Branches

They are long and woody. They shoot out from the trunk. They bear leaves and flowers. These flowers turn into fruits on getting matured.

    2. Types of Trees

The trees have many features. They vary in height from 5 to 100 meters. The width of the trunk also varies from 15 cm. to 6 meters.

The German Sherman tree of California in the United States of America is 3500 years old. It is 83 meters tall and weighs 6000 tons. Its trunk’s width measures 24 cm. The Hyperion tree also found in California is 115 meters tall.

A tree in Mexico called the Saipress tree is a tree that will be remembered by many people. It is 41 meters tall and weighs 636 tons. Its trunk measure 24 meters and is considered to be the only tree to have such a width. It can provide shade to 500 people at a time. It is the National Tree of Mexico.

    Types of Trees

There are around 70 thousand types of trees. They can be segregated according to their uses, type of trunk etc. Mainly they are segregated on the basis of their period of shedding trees, they are:

Evergreen Trees they remain evergreen through the year and shed their leaves at different periods of time. They can further be divided into two groups, they are:

Coniferous Trees: These trees have sharply pointed leaves with a waxy coating. They are found in the snow cold mountains of Europe and Asia. They are also found in the jungles of Asia. Spruce and pines are good examples of such trees.

Rounded leafy trees: These trees have round shaped leaves with no waxy coating. These include trees like Oak and Carob. They can be found mostly in plains.

Tropical Deciduous Trees are those that shed their leaves in a particular season mostly autumn. They are very common in the jungles of Europe, Asia and America. The Baobab Tree of South Africa is a good example of such trees. These trees can further be divided into two groups:

Flowerless Trees have thorns in place of
