ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF THOSE WHO WENT THE EXTRA MILE!

This story would have not been told without the tremendous support and help from the following:

Sherri Aguilar, my daughter, printing copies after copies of the revisions of the manuscript, holding my hand when I was frustrated, and cheering me over the line.

To my boys who thought I was too old to write a book but liked the finished product.

Margaret Harmon, a well- known author in La Jolla, Ca who gave me great advice and encouragement. A great mentor!

Sid Shapira of San Diego, spending hours of editing, and generous with sage wisdom from years of teaching others to write their books.

To my entire office staff for fending off visitors so I could spend time on the book.

And to Maury Clark, another mentor and best friend who endured my raving on and on and on about this book ….and he listened!

Dedicated to the Appalachian Mountain People. Those who live there, those who moved away, but their hearts are still in the mountains.

    THAT’S WHAT THEY SAID?

Through the years since I left the mountains to move to California people were always saying, Why don’t you speak English? I cannot understand you! In our holler we spoke English…Shakespearean English!

When I started giving seminars around the country I visited a Speech therapyist He asked, How can I help you?

I want to get rid of this Southern Accent since I will be speaking to people in all the different states. I answered.

Sorry, I cannot help you. That will be your calling card and it would be wrong of me to try to change that.

After many years I saw his reasoning. People would call, could not remember my name but would ask for the lady with the Southern voice.

Below I have listed hillbilly language found in this book and others so you can interpret:

Don’t have a pot to piss in. Very poor economically

    poke Paper bag

dumber than a sack of rocks Not very smart.

"fixin’ Getting ready to do something-like starting supper.

    tore up emotionally effected

Goodness Sakes, alive! answer or exclamation for an unusual situation

    pop any kind of soda

y’all You all, but many Appalachian areas use when speaking to one person

wrek could be a car or wagon wrek. Also used as appearance

    She’s a wrek.

    thunk think

    wanten wanted to

    letum Let them

    reckon so It’s ok

over yonder giving direction (usually with a wave of the hand)

ain’t I am not going to do that

acting up trying to get attention

    far fire

    tar Tire"

If you are interested in dialects around the states you may enjoy visiting Appalachian areas.

    Lee Harvey, Author

A transplant from the Smokey Mountains to that foreign land of California.

Years passed but Lee never lost her love for those mountains! The book depicts mountain life with descriptions of the Appalachian Trail, stories of her ancestors, of course her

Grandpa’s moonshine still, the plight of her ancestors when they were forcefully moved from their cabin located on the highest mountain top, to make way for the "Great Smokey Mountain National Park.

In her wildest dreams would she ever think that one day she may face her death in those glorious mountains! Death just around the treacherous curve, Dead Man’s Curve", not from an ordinary accident but from those who would profit from her death.

Hold Lee’s hand as she and her small daughter trudge across the mountainside with terror

In their hearts! Through the years of accumulative mulch, with rain pouring down, to escape those who would take their life. With the question ringing in her head, Why, Why, was this happening?

This story will grab you! Shake you! Not let you go until you reach the final word!

    Chapter 1

As the scenery began to change at the foot of the winding mountain road that led over the Great Smokey Mountains National Park from North Carolina to the Tennessee side, Billie Jo felt a twinge of sadness as this would be perhaps her last trip home for many years.

Shocks of leafy corn stalks that would be feed for the cows this winter were standing row by row in some of the valley fields. Occasionally, brown tobacco plants could be seen on the cleared hillside areas. When harvested, the plants would be taken by wagon to the tall tobacco barns to be hung on rods placed close to the ceiling. The plants were hung upside down to set the flavor of the finished product.

As she drove past the fields, Billie Jo reflected on the many summers she had spent picking tobacco worms off the long leaves of the plants. She could see the sun peeking through in spots and could sense its battle with the dark rain clouds that hung low in the sky."

As she neared the top of Maggie Valley, she decided to stop. Billie Jo had visited this area many times and each time she came away with great memories. She glanced to the back seat where Kelli, her little six-year-old daughter, had been napping. By now, the steep curves in the road had awakened her.

Kelli, I am going to pull out in the view space so you can see one of the most beautiful places in the world, said Billie Jo. "People come from all over the world to
