    They had no business placing that hateful trail right through Indian country. The Oregon Trail led up toward the northwest territory and saved many weeks of travel compared to going into California, then north to the northwest territories. But to get there on the Oregon Trail, they had to brave the Blackfoot and the Shoshone. Four different families of the determined Indians controlled a third of the Oregon Trail.

    Fort Hall was the final wagon stop in 1839. The rest was traveled by foot or horseback into the reaches of the Oregon Territory, although more and more of the trail was opening up for the immigrants that had to find their way to the sea.

    Like many Native Americans, the Shoshone were eventually decimated, then forcibly moved to reservations far from their home. Though the story, Trail of Tears, applied to many southeastern, mid-west and southwest tribes, the Shoshone endured the same forced march, and nearly slipped into obscurity.
    But even in the most dire of circumstance, regardless of the era, love is like the lonely flower in the most barren desert. It springs, eternal, and somehow life goes on...
