About this ebook

CODE 4 is police jargon for "the situation is under control", and that is the end result of most interactions with the police. But the Police seriously injure thousands of unarmed people each year? It happens because most of the injured individuals were never taught the rules-of-engagement for safe police encounters.

This book fills that void by teaching the reader how to conduct oneself in a manner that puts the officer at ease. Which creates a mutually respectful environment where both sides win, and everyone goes home alive and well.

Any person who may experience traffic stops or other police contacts will benefit from reading this book. It is also useful for people of color, and young people who party with rowdy friends. But this book is an absolute must for anyone that spends time in high-crime-rate areas—where policing is usually much more aggressive.

Preface

Police officers engage with civilians in the course of performing their duties. They’re trained to do so safely, efficiently, and effectively. That’s the plan, yet we all know that not every officer performs the same. Many factors are involved in any situation, any of which can result in encounters that are less than ideal.

Also, even though the police are trained, most civilians don’t have any training on how to interact with officers. Most of us wing it, and we don’t always do the right thing.

The bad news is that you can’t control what an officer does. The good news is you can control what you do, and you can choose to behave in ways that benefit you.

You may feel out of control, even afraid, nervous, or angry, all of which may worsen the situation. The officer will notice and wonder if they have something to fear from you.

I wrote this book to give you the information you need to keep yourself safe when you interact with the police.

I also hope the book will help reduce the number of people—civilians and officers—injured or killed each year when an interaction between a civilian and an officer goes wrong.
