You Belong With Me - Megan Grooms
Mary Ann turned to lock her door and caught movement on her neighbor’s porch. Oliver was just leaving his house too. It wasn’t a surprise really, they left at the same time every day to get to school on time, but Mary Ann couldn’t help her sharp intake of breath at seeing him. He was as gorgeous today as he always was. They had known each other all their lives. She had spent as much time at his house as she did her own, but once they hit eighth grade, she had started to notice him as more than a friend. He did not have this problem it seemed however. She sighed and flicked the key in the lock. It was pointless to think of him in anyway than just a friend. Again, she looked over. He was smiling to himself one side of his mouth curled up. His wavy, dirty blond hair, bounced a little has he went down the steps, his long legs taking them two at a time, as was his custom when he was running a little behind. Mary Ann groaned to herself and pulled her eyes away again.
Oh, hey Mary Ann! I didn’t see you there.
His voice made her look up, his piercing blue eyes caught hers and she couldn’t look away. Did you get that report done for English? It was such a pain in the ass. I had to stay up late to get it done.
He walked across his lawn and stood on his side of the white picket fence that separated the two yards. I’m going to have to sneak a nap in during study hall. Coach will kill me if I look tired at practice.
Mary Ann laughed a little as she met him on her side of the fence. Yeah, I got mine done the other night. The big game is coming up. If he finds out you’ve been slacking in class, he won’t play you. You don’t want to have to sit out.
He scoffed, and put a hand to his chest as if offended me, sit out the game?
Oliver smiled and shook his head chuckling. I haven’t been slacking. I was going to get it done Saturday but...
He trailed off his lips turning down a bit. He shook his head and looked at her again, the slight frown disappearing. It’s in two weeks anyway, I have plenty of time. Do you want a ride to school?
he paused a moment, I have to pick up Lucy.
His face fell a little again mentioning his girlfriend.
As if on que her friend Joni pulled into her driveway. No thanks, I’m covered.
She watched her friend’s face are you alright Oli?
She wondered if the two of them were fighting again.
Oliver shook his head I’m fine. Lucy is just a little upset with me right now.
He chuckled, but not like anything was really funny. I better get going or she’ll be more than a little upset with me. I’ll see you at school.
He waved and was jogging to his car before she could answer him.
A horn honked and startled Mary Ann. She turned around, a little red in the face. Sorry,
she mumbled climbing into the front seat. Her friend just shook her head, curly black hair swinging. I know, I know, pathetic, and hopeless.
Joni sighed backing out of the driveway. You can like whomever you want,
she said, gunning it down the road. I just hate to see you pine after a guy that probably doesn’t even register you as a girl.
Mary Ann winced a little. You know what I mean, you two have been friends so long he probably doesn’t notice that you’ve grown up into a smoking hot woman.
Snorting her laughter, Mary Ann shot her friend a look. Smoking hot? Are you watching stupid movies again? I’ve got plain brown hair, glasses, and a weird fashion sense that no one, including myself, really understands. I am completely average, not very tall, I don’t have long legs or big boobs. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he didn’t realize I was a girl. Doesn’t mean I haven’t noticed that he has turned into a ‘smoking hot’ man.
She sighed again. Besides, if his past, and current, girlfriends, tell us anything, it’s that I am not his typical type.
They pulled up to the school. Why don’t you just get over him then and find someone else? I’m sure there are plenty of guys that would like to date you, but don’t bother because you are so obviously in love with Oliver.
Mary Ann didn’t answer right away. She climbed out and shut the door behind her. It is not that obvious,
she said, though she knew that was a lie and Joni’s dark brown eyes narrowed at her. Fine it is, but not to him, thank god.
Finally, she shrugged you don’t think I’ve tried to forget him? I have, it’s just really hard. Besides, no one else at this school holds my interest. I guess I’ll have to wait until college and I’m not around him every day to try to forget him.
Joni growled yeah and waste your entire high school years pining after him and having no fun.
Hey I have fun,
Mary Ann countered following her friend up the front steps of the school. You and I have loads of fun.
They put their things in their lockers and headed to
