About this ebook

Penelope heads out to the silver mining town of Leadville, Colorado after her cousin Bess' husband is killed in an accident on his way back from his mining claim in the mountains.

Unlike Penelope, Bess didn't inherit much in the way of witchcraft. But the one skill she has is detecting when someone is lying...so she knows that the miners who brought her husband's body back to town aren't telling the truth.

The only way to find out what really happened is for the women to head up into the mountains and investigate the mine themselves. But they find much, much more than they expected to...

I’d used my last freshen-up spell yesterday, and had spent the past few hours daydreaming about taking a bath.

My cousin Bess’ letter, written in her neat cursive script, had been both confusing and intriguing. A few months ago, her husband William had been prospecting for gold, but had instead discovered a vein of silver in a wall in a cave in the mountains northwest of town. He’d filed a mining claim as soon as he got back to Leadville, bought some equipment, and headed back up to the cave to see if there was enough silver to mine. A week later, on his way down from the mountains, he’d been killed by a sudden rockfall. The pair of miners who brought his body back to town said they’d seen it happen, and that William had died instantly.

In Bess’ letter she explained all of the facts, and then wrote and underlined the cryptic sentence, "This is not true."

Anyone else reading that would think her a grief-stricken widow, but I knew better. Bess was a witch. She hadn’t inherited much in the way of magical abilities, but the one skill she did have
