CHAPTER ONE
An Odd Visitor
The sharp thud jolted through Tiffany and almost made her drop the martini glasses she'd been drying from the previous night's party. Well, Cosmo glasses, to be exact. Tiffany never made martinis for her guests, finding the bridal parties much preferred a pink drink that celebrated femininity. She looked around for the source and surmised that Lexy the black Persian cat had jumped down from the counter to the kitchen floor.
Lexy, you startled me.
Tiffany smiled down at the fuzzy creature, who licked his paw and looked up at her with big yellow eyes like, so?
She appreciated the company of the handsome feline and his white twin Lacey, who was Tiffany's traditional companion in the kitchen, well, outside of when the health inspector came. But the typically aloof Lexy had hardly left her side since the battle a month before, where an archangel had defeated a demon in the town square, and the mental barriers that had kept Tiffany from remembering her past had started to crumble.
There had also been a handsome man named Toby, but he'd gone back to Seattle, although he'd continued to keep in touch. Tiffany both hoped for and dreaded seeing him again and smiled at the thought of telling him about the cats' latest shenanigans. Not that she should encourage him by bringing him into her life, even tangentially. She'd always had a sense of needing to be alone, but now the bubbles of memory that surfaced reminded her why - love gave her the confidence to use her powers of flame, and that had always ended badly for her beloved. Toby didn't need that, especially now that his father was feeling better and was running poor Toby ragged in his new business.
Another thud almost made Tiffany drop the pitcher she carried to the sideboard in the main entertaining area of the little house she'd converted into The Bride's Best Friend: A Bachelorette Emporium. She looked around but didn't see a feline culprit beyond the disappearing end of a fuzzy black tail under the sideboard. The sound repeated, and she realized it hadn't been the cat. The noise came from the basement.
She placed the pitcher on the sideboard's variegated red marble top and took a deep breath to calm the galloping of her heart. The demon Asmodeous had been bound. She trusted Raphael on that count. But had some other nasty come to take a look? The archangel had said the tale wasn't over yet.
Thump. She wasn't going to find out just by standing there, and she rubbed her fingers to soothe the tingling. As much as she hated confrontation, the part of her that wanted release - her inner flames - itched for a fight. But nothing good had ever come from loosing them, so she kept them suppressed as best she could. And if she'd started having hot flashes since the battle with the demon, well, she could make up a story about how women in her family had always gone into menopause early. For all she knew, it could be true.
Tiffany walked through the kitchen and into the mud room, which opened on to the small back yard she would use for parties and brunches when the weather got nicer. And the shed she used for spell-working she couldn't do inside the house. Today, however, a drizzly mist hung in the air and covered everything. It was a good day for ghosts, which she didn't feel like dealing with. She inhaled deeply again, and with an emphatic exhale, opened the heavy wooden door.
The basement - more a glorified crawl space with its walls made of earth - appeared to be empty. She'd figured out early on that she couldn't keep anything like cardboard down there - it would just mold - but she had metal shelves full of crystals of many shapes, sizes, and colors along the stairs. They helped her in some of her kitchen witch rituals, and she'd give them as gifts to brides she particularly liked. When she walked down to check on them, she saw several of them had been knocked over, especially on her shelf of smoky quartz. But she couldn't tell if anything was missing.
The noise had stopped, but she noticed that one of the vapor barriers, plastic coverings over the exposed dirt, had been disturbed, and when she lifted it, she saw a hole about six inches in diameter. Great, a mouse? Rats?
