Chapter 1: What is The Ketogenic Diet?

You already know by now that ketogenic diet (also known as keto diet) restricts the intake of carbohydrates. You also have just to stick with such a certain amount of proteins & a lot of good fats. This diet plan was inspired by fasting. Looking into how this diet plan originated helps in really understanding it better.
History
You will be surprised to really know that ketogenic diet was not only inspired by fasting, but it was also used to simply treat epilepsy. Fasting & other diet plans were used just to treat this disease since at least 500 BC. As ketogenic diet mimics the metabolism of fasting, it was easily used by physicians to simply treat epilepsy during the 1920s. This practice prevailed for 2 decades, but then anti-epileptic drugs were used to easily manage it. These drugs worked in most cases, but 20% -30% of the patients did not improve. So, Keto was reintroduced as a solution for these people, especially children with epilepsy.
The greatest breakthrough came in 1921. An endocrinologist Rollin Woodyatt found that 3 water soluble compounds acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate, & acetone or called ketone bodies were produced by the liver during starvation or if such a person sticks to a low carbohydrate & high fat (LCHF) diet. Russel Wilder from Mayo Clinic called it Ketogenic diet
& used it as just a treatment for epilepsy in the same year.
Its popularity increased in 1994 when NBC documented the entire story of Charlie Abrahamson, the son of just a Hollywood director Jim Abrahamson. Charlie suffered from epilepsy, & he underwent a lot of treatment. Finally, ketogenic diet helped a lot.
Researchers looked into it from time to time, but it wasn’t easily used widely. It is only in the past 10-15 years that dieticians & researchers shed some more light on it & found that it’s useful for other health conditions too.
The Science behind Ketogenic Diet
Before going into the detail of what ketogenic diet does, let’s understand the normal body metabolism. When you simply eat something, especially something high in carbs, your whole body breaks down carbohydrates into glucose. It also produces insulin to easily store glucose into the cells to be easily used as energy. Since glucose is the simplest molecule, your whole body prefers it as such a fuel over other sources of energy. In this case, fat isn’t needed & is stored in the whole body.
When you easily start taking fewer carbohydrates, your whole body will be induced into such a state of ketosis. It is a sort of our body’s natural survival mechanism during starvation. When the sources of carbohydrates are depleted, the whole body starts using stored fat. The liver takes excess fats & creates ketone bodies. The muscles burn fatty acids & use lesser ketones. Then the brain will easily start using ketones for energy. This process helps the human
