Courage to Stand - Sandra Spurgeon
Praise for Sandra Spurgeon, J.D. and Courage to Stand
Courage to Stand, written by Sandra Spurgeon, is the story of an insurance defense attorney turned victim advocate. Her mastery of effective trial strategies and techniques. It is a concise, step-by-step, instructive approach of how one attorney develops her case from the decision to represent a client to the outcome of the case. It demonstrates the importance of preparedness, leaving no stone unturned. The reader is presented not only with opinion but concrete examples.
This book is personal – just like its author! In working with Sandra during the process of trial preparation, a friendship was kindled. I witnessed the development of her courage to take a stand in the courtroom. That chutzpah to fight came long before her battles in the courtroom, however. Within her personal life, Sandra has had challenges that would cause most to surrender. Rather than give-up, those challenges led to a need to fight for the best information, the best resources – never accepting that cannot be done
as an answer. That audacity to take a stand instilled a strong passion to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. Her story is about being true to one’s self – taking the natural strength and ability in one part of your life and learning how to effectively use it in other parts.
Passion is essential to being a successful trial attorney. Without the passion, a case becomes a task instead of a fight for what you believe is right. Sandra has that passion – the passion to help undo a wrong, the passion to work long hours to prepare, and the passion for continuing to learn how to better develop her skills for the sake of clients. An example was her willingness to try a different approach ito qualifying jurors. Nowhere in the training of attorneys is taught the skill to be conversational – to ask questions for which the answer is unknow. A good trial attorney controls everything. Everything, that is, except when questioning jurors during voir dire. You have to have the courage to ask questions that might yield negative comments about you, the issues in your case, or opinions of your client. Getting a complete stranger to share their most personal experiences or opinions related issues in the case issues is an art. An art worth learning.
Unlike many who are unwilling to share their ‘secret sauce’, this book is about one trial attorney graciously willing to share her experiences and strategies – elements that gave her the courage necessary to fight for what is right for the client.

The brevity and easy read of Sandra Spurgeon’s new book, Courage to Stand, belies its worth for many kinds of readers—including anyone interested in how personal injury trials work, anyone with an upcoming personal injury case, anyone on a jury who wants a better understanding of what’s going on in front of them, anyone contemplating a career in trial law. Above all it’s for the new attorney first taking on the role of personal injury trial lawyer. In sequential order, Spurgeon lays out all the lawyer must do from jury selection through to the final words of her closing, and she explains how to do each piece of it. She covers strategies and mechanics, provides concise and clear examples, writes not from an academic or theoretical perspective but directly from a life spent in the trenches where she’s a veteran more than of a hundred trials. Her experience enables her to have written this veritable checklist of all the trial lawyer must do. Just as pilots cannot successfully fly without a thorough checklist, neither can a lawyer successfully try cases without Spurgeon's thorough day-by-day, task-by-task checklist her book boils down to. If you’re a trial lawyer starting out, Courage to Stand will ease your jangling nerves by taking you through the whole process so you won’t worry about leaving out or screwing up anything important. Even if you’re a seasoned trial lawyer, you’ll find this book a gentle reminder of some important things you may have forgotten over the years. So grand Kudos to counsel Spurgeon. Her gentle, supportive, factual, commonsensical, and memorable book will give you the courage to stand in front of jurors. It belongs on your shelf to be taken down to review before every trial.

As a physician who prides himself on patient care striving to do what's best for my patients, I have been asked to render opinions regarding the standard of care by attorneys. It has never been a matter of plaintiff or defense but rather the facts of a particular matter and the desire to improve patient care. I never envisioned that through my professional journey, I would encounter this Southern belle, Sandra Spurgeon.
If I had chosen to go to law school, Sandra Spurgeon is the attorney I would have been. So many attorneys make the fatal error of thinking they know the medicine
without ever understanding the basic principles and complex issues at hand when providing care to infants and children. When I agreed to review a medical legal matter for Sandra, I recognized that she was different. In fact, she is one in a million. I quickly realized that she’s very selective in her case selection and is a true champion for her clients. During our consultations, she made it clear that I was the teacher and she was there to learn the medicine. I would provide insight to her regarding my opinions regarding deviations in the standard of care but the journey did not there. Sandra wanted to understand all aspects of the infant’s care as to what happened, why it occurred and how it could it have been prevented. Her inquisitive mind in learning the details was refreshing. Never once did she suggest that I change an opinion but respected me for medical expertise. Sandra has the highest of moral and ethical standards. She is an attorney who presents facts, not one who tries to push fiction. I respect her for that and admire her zeal in championing patient rights.
While appearing live to testify at a trial, I had the opportunity to see Sandra in action. I was amazed watching her deliverance in the courtroom as she was advocating for better medical care for children. It was an honor
