365 Micro Science Fiction I - Mehmet Kardaş

    Preface

In the beginning of 2017, and going back even further, I had been trying to form a daily writing habit, and failing miserably every time. Then, around that time, a Turkish sci-fi Twitter fiction competition gave me an idea. I could at least write 140 characters –Twitter character limit at the time– a day every day, right? I mean, how hard could it be?

So, I began writing Twitter sized sci-fi stories in my native language, Turkish, and publishing them on @BK_Mikrohikaye on April 29, 2017. At the beginning, it didn’t even occur to me to check if there were other accounts doing similar things on Twitter, and maybe that was for the best, as I was just pretty much doing my own thing in a vacuum. And it was hard, especially after the first couple of months, but I persevered and the Turkish account is still going strong after two years of sci-fi stories every day.

But why am I telling you all this? Because, the stories in this book were actually written in Turkish almost two years ago. They were then translated/adapted to English and were published daily on @Micro_Scifi beginning on April 29, 2018, after the first year anniversary of the Turkish account. Now, at that time, I was aware of other accounts publishing micro fiction on Twitter, greats like @MicroSFF and @ASmallFiction, and I was hesitant to start one in English, as English is not my native language.

But I did start. And the book you’re reading contains the first year’s stories.

It wasn’t always easy, though. I had to skip some stories as they relied too much on wordplay, and some, I wasn’t happy with my adaptations, so they are still in incubation. Another thing I didn’t expect was what to use for the pronouns in these stories. You see, Turkish is a gender neutral language in terms of its pronouns. I think that makes the micro stories richer, as it allows people to decide the character genders for themselves. But in English, I had to be the one to choose. Also, there were grammar mistakes, and some bad use of the language in their first publication. Thankfully –and hopefully–, they are all fixed in this book.

A few notes about the format of the book. The stories are presented in chronological order with the day number, the date, and the story itself for each story. Being chronological, you might find the stories at the beginning not so great as they were written at the beginning of my journey (and when the Twitter character limit was 140, as opposed to the current 280). But if you keep turning the pages, I think you will see how I evolved as a micro fiction writer. Also, if you’d like share a story or leave comments, you can click on the day number to go to that story on Twitter. As a final note, two of the stories had to be presented as images in the book because they were unsuitable for the e-book format.

Finally, I want to thank a few people. First of all, my Turkish readers who were very supportive in getting me this far, and the first year readers of @Micro Sci-Fi, every retweet, like and comment helped me, thank you for reading. Thank you so much to Ruthie Rayne Clark (@imloti) who volunteered and edited these stories. They wouldn’t be as polished as they are now without her. Another thanks to @deborahh who had also volunteered to help.

And lastly, thank you, the reader, for picking up this book of micro sci-fi stories. I hope you get inspired and enjoy your time!
