A GORGEOUSLY GOTHIC, WICKEDLY FUNNY NEW SERIES FROM WITCH WARS ILLUSTRATOR LAURA ELLEN ANDERSON

Welcome to the world of Nocturnia, where darkness reigns supreme, glitter is terrifying, and unicorns are the stuff of nightmares! Amelia Fang would much rather hang out with her pet pumpkin Squashy and her friends Florence the yeti (DON'T CALL HER BEAST!) and Grimaldi the reaper than dance at her parents' annual Barbaric Ball.

And when the King’s spoiled son Tangine captures Squashy, Amelia and her friends must escape the party to plan a daring rescue! In their race against time, they begin to realise things in Nocturnia may not be quite what they seem . . .

Join Amelia on her very first adventure. She won't bite!

This gloriously ghostly new series from the creator of EVIL EMPEROR PENGUIN  is perfect for 7-9 year olds and fans of THE WORST WITCH and WITCH WARS. Amelia Fang is a modern Wednesday Addams - but much more loveable!

Look out for Amelia's next adventure, AMELIA FANG AND THE UNICORN LORDS, coming soon!

Praise for Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball:

'Brilliantly imagined . . . laugh-out-loud funny' Sunday Express

'The perfect mixture of funny, foul and fearful' Metro

When she's not trying to take over the world or fighting sock-stealing monsters, Laura Ellen Anderson is a professional children's book author & illustrator, with an increasing addiction to coffee. She spends every waking hour creating and drawing, and would quite like to live on the moon when humans finally make it possible. Laura is the creator of EVIL EMPEROR PENGUIN and illustrator of WITCH WARS, as well as many other children’s books. AMELIA FANG is her first series as author-illustrator.

This first Amelia Fang adventure is a wonderful story for younger readers. The world building is fabulously original. it's set in a delightfully grotesque world where all things creepy and disgusting are normal, and cute and glittery things are something to be feared. The reversal is simple, but massively effective and leads to some very cute and funny scenes (such as a vampire fleeing in fear from a kitten). The illustrations of the story are equally charming, with Anderson's art doing a great job of capturing the personality of her characters. From the hulking yet surprisingly graceful Florence, to the diminutive Prince Tangine, all characters are very distinct in appearance and the illustrations help to make up for the occasional lack of detail in the prose. In terms of plot, the story is fast paced and engaging. The spoiled Prince is quick to establish himself as a villain and is very easy to hate, so you really do feel for Amelia as she struggles to rescue Squashy from his clutches. I found myself becoming surprisingly invested in the well-being of the pumpkin (there's something that I never thought that I would write) but the story never becomes too frightening or heavy. The emotional scenes of pumpkin endangerment are nicely balanced by the story's excellent humour, including some nifty puns like Grimaldi's diephone.Yet, as the story progresses, it does reveal some interesting twists. While these are signposted early in the tale, they still come as a pleasant surprise and take the story in a somewhat unexpected direction. The ending of the story was satisfying, but far from final as it left a lot of loose threads hanging to be picked up by a future sequel. In terms of characters, the book was really strong. There are a lot of really memorable gribblies here and I particularly liked Wooo, the Fangs' ghostly butler who really did not stand for bullies. The story carries a nice message about acceptance and the correct way to make friends. It's a bit tried and tested, but still satisfying. Amelia is a good role model for young readers, wanting to see the best in people and able to see when she's made a mistake. All in all, I thought that this was a great children's book. It's utterly charming and would make a fantastic gift for a younger reader this Halloween.
