ONE TO TAME
"The new R’H’ani is no better than the old; its newly elected government is corrupt to its core. Our duty is clear. We save who we can, and we do it in service to the great Ani."—Lettir Monoac, former Minister of Ani’Hain, 8297–8401
Ani’Hain
Three and a Half Years Ago
Brylan was going to run away. Mateo watched silently from the shadows of the garden his great-grandfather had sown the seeds to create. The nighttime meeting between Brylan and Hakiva had been planned in secret, and the only reason Mateo knew about it was because Yestrille had overheard the arrangements and immediately reported them to Mateo.
I can’t offer what I don’t have,
Brylan said again. The flat line of his mouth made his lips look thin and hard, but Mateo knew it was an illusion. "What will you accept for payment?"
Brylan’s furious whispers carried on the slight breeze, chill with the last gasp of the cold season, as Mateo had known they would. Mateo had eavesdropped on his grandmother’s secretive conversations with Sarana’s mother many times in these same gardens when he was a boy.
It wasn’t uncommon for a nebu to attempt to return to his former life, but it usually happened early in the term of adjustment. The fact that Brylan hadn’t shown any signs of unhappiness with his new life for more than five months had tricked Mateo into letting down his guard.
He’d become careless, and he hadn’t connected Brylan’s interest in Hakiva’s right-hand man with a desire to return to R’H’ani until Yestrille told him of the secret meeting Hakiva’s man had arranged for Brylan and Hakiva.
Hours earlier, Brylan had told Mateo he wanted more time to study the differences between the R’H’ani and Hainian languages and that he preferred to do it at night, when the halls were quiet and the activity wasn’t as distracting. Mateo had believed him, because Brylan had shown a great interest in the language from that first day after his arrival by ship across the Ani ocean.
But Brylan hadn’t been studying languages.
He’d been plotting an escape.
Mateo had heard everything. His disappointment was a crushing weight in his chest, but it was difficult to focus on that disappointment with anger building by the moment as the negotiation between Hakiva and Brylan progressed.
Hakiva laid his hand on Brylan’s chest.
Brylan looked down.
Hakiva’s hand trailed from the top of Brylan’s fitted blue shirt to the waist of his loose trousers.
The lamplight behind Hakiva made it easy for Mateo to see Brylan’s mouth tighten even further, his frown deep enough to create furrows between his eyebrows. The only sound in the gardens was the whisper of wind through the plants that had survived the cold season and the
