"The poor, the unsuccessful, the unhappy, and the
unhealthy are the ones who use the word tomorrow
the most." –ROBERT KIYOSAKI
In 2004, one of my mentors wrote a book titled, Today Matters: 12 Daily Practices to Guarantee Tomorrow’s Success. After describing some misconceptions about success in his book, Maxwell turned his emphasis to why today matters so much and why we allow golden opportunities to slip so carelessly out of our grasp. He believes this happens mainly for three reasons.
The first reason is that we overexaggerate yesterday. Many of us either ride on our past successes, or dwell on our past failures. The sad reality is that despite how good the Creator has been to us, some of us choose to focus on what we could have done had things gone differently. Maxwell states, Almost any opportunity that went unpursued looks golden now that it’s too late to go after it.
A dear friend of mine puts it this way: Young man dreams or old man wishes.
Of course, I believe that it is never too late to pursue your dreams, but I am wise enough to know now that as you reach the latter years of your life, it is more difficult to spread your wings and fly. Remember that no matter how good or bad the previous day has been, we must maximize the opportunities today brings our way.William Scott lays out practical action steps that are indispensable for those of us who want to decrease the pain of overexaggerating yesterday.
The second reason we allow precious opportunities to slip away is that we overestimate tomorrow. No one knows what tomorrow may hold; therefore, it is best to take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves today. The way we often imagine the future is through the hope that what is possible for others is also possible for us. There is only one small problem with this frame of thought, and Maxwell puts it this way:
"Hoping for a good future without investing in today
is like a farmer waiting for a crop without ever
planting any seed!"
Most millennials do not have a frame of reference for Maxwell’s analogy. Some have never held a seed in their hand, nonetheless seen a crop. Maybe this analogy will help. Hoping for a good future without investing is like Cardi B trying to make money moves without first spending countless hours in the studio trying to perfect her craft. There is an ancient manuscript that says as long as the earth remains, there will be seedtime and harvest. The only time the word harvest
comes before seedtime
is in the dictionary. As you read this book, you will become pregnant with ideas about how to make money moves that will bring you wealth for
