    Obsession - Nancy Chastain

    Chapter 1

Friday nights after work, two of my co-workers, Nikki Ross and Samantha (Sam) Green, and I liked to meet at Club Now to relax and cut loose.

I am so ready to have a cocktail tonight, Sam said, as we headed to the door.  Both of us work at Bright and Bright Law Firm in Oklahoma as legal assistants. She works for Carrie Bright, in family law, while I work with David, who specializes in corporate law.

I dropped my purse in a drawer at my desk. The phone rang as I reached over to turn on my computer.

Good morning, sir. How may I help you? I answered, as I hurriedly tried to get my computer up and going.

I need you to come in here, David sternly replie.

Yes, sir. I’ll be right there.  I grabbed my notepad and pen and knocked on David’s door.

Come in and sit down.  We have a new case I need you to look over.  When you have gone over the books, I want you to tell me what your thoughts are. David took a seat in his chair.

Yes, sir, I responded as I gathered up the files sitting on the desk.

Sara, this case is not to be discussed with anyone except me, understand?  David’s eyes searched my face for a sign of defiance.

Of course, I replied and went back to my desk.

Strange. I never discussed cases with anyone except David.  Why would I?  It’s corporate law.  The most boring cases in the firm, according to Sam. However, I enjoyed going through the files on corporations and finding how they did or didn’t work.

Nikki peaked around the half wall, which separated our desks, and stood on the tips of her toes to glance around the room. She hated attention and usually only spoke when there were not many people around. Everything okay?" she asked.

Yes, I replied, not even bothering to look up from the documents David had asked me to review on Russ Industries, INC. One thing I learned over the years was to always start with the tax returns—almost everything can be learned from taxes. So as soon as I spotted those, I pulled them from the file.

Russ Industries owned several corporations, which meant I’d have to do this slowly.  I should’ve asked David if he had a deadline for when this had to be done and exactly what I was looking for.

I was so engrossed in the file that I didn’t hear Sam walk up.

Excuse me! Are you planning to join us for lunch today, or are you going to stay here with your nose in that file?  Sam sarcastically asked with her hand on her hip.

Oh, it’s already lunch time?  I can’t believe four hours have flown by. Let me grab my purse. Where are we going today? I asked, hoping for something light to eat.

There’s the new place around the corner called Max’s. It has soup, salads, and sandwiches.  Want to try there? Nikki asked.

Sure, Sam and I said at the same time.

We walked out of the building and the short distance to the restaurant. Max’s was a typical Italian deli with coolers filled with meats and cheeses, and they offered several types of bread to choose from.  They had small, cozy tables with red-checkered tablecloths, each with bottles of oil and vinegar.  Soft music played as customers ordered and sat down to eat before continuing with their lives.  We were lucky, and found a table inside, instead of the cute patio off to the side of the deli.  We settled on sharing the antipasto salad with a cheese and a meat appetizer.

We were talking about going to Club Now when someone bumped into the back of my chair, causing the bite of antipasto salad on my fork to slide down the front of my shirt.

What the hell? I exclaimed, a little louder than I had intended. The oil on my light blue shirt soaked into the material, staining it.  I turned around, to give a piece of my mind to whomever caused me to currently be wearing my lunch, and my eyes locked onto the most delicious deep brown eyes I had ever seen.

I am so sorry. Let me pay for the dry cleaning. I heard the words, but I stared into his eyes so long his voice sounded muffled.

Sam kicked me under the table to bring me back to reality.  I must have looked like a complete idiot with my mouth hanging open.  God, please don’t let me be drooling!

I am truly sorry, ma’am. Please accept my apologies, said the guy with the deep chocolate eyes and wavy dark hair.

He did look sorry, so I thought to myself, Let’s have a little fun.

You didn’t like the look of my shirt? I asked.

It looks perfect, he stumbled to say.

Perfect? Who are you to judge perfection?

I just know what I like. Besides, you look good in a shirt with a stain.

I always thought something was missing with this shirt design. I just didn’t realize I needed to add an oil stain to give it that special something, I replied sarcastically.

A slow smirk formed on his face. So, you’re in the fashion industry?

In the fashion industry? I couldn’t help but grin back.  I liked this guy; he was a fellow smart ass. Sir, do you not know who I am?  I said, as I put my hand on my heart and pretended to be hurt that he didn’t know who I was.

Pardon me, my lady. It slipped my mind.  But of course, you are the famous light blue shirt designer that designed the new oil-stained look, he said, as he bowed in front of me.

I enjoyed this banter with Mr. Tall, Dark, and Yummy. Now you know.

There was that smirk again, showing only one dimple and those deep chocolate eyes. I was a goner.

Hi, I’m Dillion, and I am truly sorry for your shirt, he said, while extending his hand to me.

I took his calloused hand in mine. I was momentarily shocked. The contact sent an electric zing coursing through me. Did he feel that same surge of energy when we touched as I did?

Evidently, he did, as his eyebrow raised a bit.

Hi, I’m Sara.  I guess you’re forgiven since you helped me complete the design of the infamous shirt.  He was still holding my hand.  This was verging on awkward, but it felt nice.  No one had piqued my interest in a long time, and boy, was I interested.

Nikki cleared her throat. Sara, are you ready? We need to leave or we’re going to be late. she said with a hint of bitchiness in her voice.

Sam and I both gave Nikki a confused look.

It was nice bumping into you, Sara, Dillion said, taking the hint.  I would like to bump into you again.  Would you like to go out?  I was usually pretty cautious about giving my number out, but Sam, being Sam, jumped in with the save.

We are going to Club Now tonight if you and your friend would like to meet us there.  Sam nodded toward the blond guy, who casually leaned against the counter.

Dillion looked at the guy, and he walked over to us. This is Tony, Dillion introduced.  Tony’s dad is the owner of this place.

Hi, Tony greeted in a smooth Oklahoma drawl and looked at Sam as if he were stripping her right where she stood.

Sam openly looked Tony up and down while reaching to take his hand. Hi, she purred.

I am leaving. Are you two coming back to work or not? Nikki interfered.

Sam beat me to the punch. Nikki, I’m not sure what twisted your panties, but you better go get it sorted out.

Nikki grabbed her purse and out the door she went.  I looked towards Sam, but she was already back to mentally undressing Tony.

Dillion cleared his throat. I’m sorry if we upset your friend. I would like to see you again.

We’re going to be at the club around eight if you’d like to meet us there, I said, barely above a whisper.  I couldn’t believe I was doing this.

It’s a date. He points at the stain on my shirt and grinned. I’m glad I could help you with your design.

Play your cards right and you might get some of the credit for it.

Dillion turned and winked before going through the door. Is it eight o’clock yet?

Sam and I headed back to the office.  The whole time, Sam rattled on and on about Tony, focusing on the way his T-shirt tightly clung to his broad shoulders, his thin waist, and the things she planned on doing to him tonight. I’ve always admired Sam’s ‘live life to the fullest’ philosophy. I just couldn’t let myself get caught up in her wake as she was going along.

We can say lunch was a win today, Sam said with a grin.

Meeting Dillion and Tony did make the day more interesting.

Sam laughs. Interesting? Girl, you were drooling over Dillion. I’ve never seen you like that.

I don’t know what it was about him. My cheeks flushed as I
