    Max’s New Book

    Lizbeth Klein

Oh, my whiskers and tail! exclaimed Martha Mouse. Where’s Max?

He’s writing another book, Mama, said Mindy with a little giggle.

What? Not another one! After ten rejections, I thought he’d learnt his lesson!

Martha clutched the rejection letter in her apron pocket, the latest one from Grey Whiskers Publishing Hole to Max. It had not only made him sad, but her as well. She remembered reading it over Max’s shoulder when he opened it and tears filled her eyes.

    Dear Max Mouse,

We cannot publish your book, How to Ski Down the Tractor Wheel as this is just too dangerous to place in the paws of small pinkies. I’m surprised you even sent it in to us to consider. It’s almost as ridiculous as the last one we received from you, How to Give Rides on Your Back to Fairies, especially when there are no such things as fairies in the first place. (Every pinky knows that!) And wasn’t there the book before that titled, How to Make Friends with Bulls. Totally out of the question! And then there was Things a Mouse Can do With His Tail. Tickling a cat’s nose made one of my editors faint with fright. He hasn’t been quite himself since reading your book and is even frightened of his own shadow.

Max Mouse, the problem with your ideas is that they are far too extreme for grown-up mice, let alone pinkies, to attempt. Please don’t send me any more of your How To books. Stick to reading instead.

    Yours sincerely,

    Sally Squeaker

Even now, Martha’s heart ached as she remembered how Max’s delicate whiskers had wilted and his tail flopped after he had read it. Such hurt on her little pinky’s face!

He said he won’t leave his quill until he’s finished, said Malcolm all of a sudden, nibbling on the grain on his plate.

Maybelle grinned. "But don’t worry, Mama, he’s almost finished. And it’s not a How To book this time. It’s an adventure story about a scary cat called Puss Without Boots."

Major Mouse roused from his sleep on the floor in the corner, leapt up and waved his toothpick sword about. What ho! Did someone say hairy cats in boots? I’ll show them a thing or two –

Martha hurried to his side and patted his arm. It’s all right Dad! There’s no cats about! Go back to sleep!

After some ado, Major Mouse complied, shoved his toothpick into his string belt and curled up on the straw again. Pretty soon, he was snoring softly. Martha sighed and turned back to her eight pinkies nibbling on fresh grain.

    Well, if he’s almost finished…

Meanwhile, Max stuck his quill behind his left ear and read the revised story after scribbling out Puss Without Boots. It went like this:

    Mouse in Boots

Once upon a time there was a miller who had three sons. When he died, he left his mill to his oldest son who turned it into a home for retired pirates. He left all his alpacas to his second oldest son who went into business with his older brother selling woollen shirts, pantaloons, eye patches and tricorn hats to passing pirates. And, last of all, he left a good-looking mouse to his youngest son called Bert because he knew he loved animals. His father also left him his sewing kit.

"Aw, please share the mill with me," pleaded Bert, after he received his meagre inheritance.

But his brothers just laughed at him and told him to get
