    DO AS YOU’RE TOLD

RESOURCES: New National Baptist Hymnal 21st Century Edition, God’s Promises Bible, Boyd’s Commentary for the Sunday School

KEY VERSE: Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. Deuteronomy 4:2, KJV

    Intro

God is faithful, and there are many ways people respond to His faithfulness. The Israelites’ journey through the wilderness was indeed a journey toward faithful obedience. Some might say that the people of God wandered aimlessly for forty years, wavering between unfaithfulness and faithfulness to God’s commands. Yet, a closer look at the wilderness experience reveals the intentional and strategic process of building a covenant relationship between God and His people. God is faithful and He expects faithfulness.

Our lesson today allows us to explore the transition of leadership between Moses and Joshua, as a new generation of God’s people are given a history lesson of His expectations. Moses then charged them to continue the journey in obedience to God’s commands. His promise is ahead of them, as they move forward with a charge to remain faithful in covenant relationship with God.

From generation to generation, believers continue to learn about God’s faithfulness and strive to live a life in obedience to God’s commands. Our world today is much like a wilderness experience where we find ourselves wandering between faithfulness and unfaithfulness. This history lesson of God’s faithfulness will help us to reflect on our covenant relationship with Him and remind us of His expectation of obedience.

    Think About It

We are often disappointed when others do not live up to our expectations. Are you living up to God’s expectations? Do you know what God expects from you?

    I. What God Told You To Do – Statutes and Ordinances (Deuteronomy 4:1–8)

The word Deuteronomy in Greek means second law or second giving of the law. The name of the fifth book of the Old Testament defines what lies within it. Moses, the leader of the Israelites, is the orator recorded in the text. Here Moses provided God’s chosen people with an excellent summation of the statutes and ordinances of God (Exodus 19–24), and advised them to listen and to obey. Statutes refer to the commands of God and ordinances refer to the judgments or circumstances that result from obedience or disobedience to the commands. Together, the statutes and ordinances of God made up the holy Law of God.

In our lesson today, we find the Israelites at a transitional point in their wilderness journey. Forty years after leaving Egypt, the new generation of Israelites are camped east of the Jordan River. God allowed Moses to stand on the hills of Pisgah and view the west, north, south and east of the Promised Land. He saw the land that God promised the Israelites, but he would not enter into it because of his own disobedience. Moses emphasized the law because he wanted to reminded them that obedience to the law was not optional. God’s promise to their ancestors was a covenant promise. The agreement, between God and His people, was a conditional agreement. Those who were obedient to God’s commands were eligible to reap the benefits of God’s promises. The disobedient would incur His wrath. Moses was painfully aware of the consequences of disobedience. His heart was with God’s people, so he poured out God’s word to them to move them forward into obedience and promise. Their lives laid in the balance between judgment and promise.

Moses also reminded the Israelites not to take anything from or add anything to God’s commands. His word is complete. Obedience is not something that can be done in part. Obedience requires total commitment to what God has commanded. As the Israelites stood with their past behind them and their destiny before them, Moses reminded them of Baal Peor.

The new generation of Israelites were eye-witnesses of the consequences of disobedience at Baal Peor. Those among them who fell prey to the enticing Moabites, and chose to offer sacrifices and bow down to idols, died in their disobedience. 24,000 Israelites died because of their unfaithfulness. Those who remained faithful were now east of the Jordan; a river away from the Promised Land (Numbers 25:1–9).

Moses spoke to them about the new journey they were about to embark upon. He wanted to ensure the Israelites understood that God’s statutes are saturated with goodness and God’s ordinances are measured according to faith. Throughout the generations, the Israelites were often distracted by temporal pleasures, false witnesses, and idol gods. Present day believers are often distracted by worldly pleasures and temporal treasures. Yet, none of these things can compare to God. Moses was teaching the Israelites about the same God we serve today. Modern day believers continue to struggle with what it really means to be obedient to a sovereign God. Yet, God calls for faithful obedience.

II. How God Expects You To Respond – Obedience (Deuteronomy 4:12–13)

Moses stood before God’s people confident in his calling as God’s mouthpiece. He then began to speak to the Israelites about the covenant promises of obedience. The greatest benefit to those who are in relationship with God is the blessing of His presence. God is with those who honor His
