How Lovebirds Stole Our Hearts
The first lovebirds attracted human attention because of their boldness, their beauty, and their fierce devotion to their partners. The legend of the lovebird is the story of two small birds, tightly bonded together against the world. They became famous for their desire to go two by two― and their fierceness in defending their homes against other, much larger birds.
Because they bonded so fiercely with each other, they were not regarded as pets in the sense that a budgerigar or a cockatiel was regarded as a pet. Instead, they were regarded in a similar light to certain finches― as fine specimens that showed well in the show cage or the aviary.
Then came the rise of good hand-feeding tools and diets. For the first time, humans could raise baby lovebirds from an early age and transfer that fierce bond from another lovebird to their human companion.
Notice I don't say, owner.
As the companion of a lovebird, you are an owner
only in the same sense that a cat owner
is an owner.
These birds do have a mind of their own. Yet the challenges can make it even more meaningful when you succeed in winning the one-on-one devotion of your very own lovebird.
But, of course, there are lots of bold and beautiful pair-bond bird species in the world. Lovebirds maintain their enduring popularity because they offer several other advantages in addition to their beauty and their boldness.
*Lovebirds, especially the popular peach-faced lovebird, are easy to feed. They don't demand complicated diets, because they evolved to seek out seeding grasses.
*Lovebirds are hardy birds that offer trouble-free exotic colors instead of being hothouse beauties who demand a lot of fussing.
*Lovebirds are eager to breed when food, water, and a safe nesting site become available. In their natural environment, they must hurry to take advantage of the breeding opportunity when the rainy season comes. These adaptable birds turned out to be great candidates for hobbyists who wanted to develop a whole rainbow of color mutations.
When you add up these advantages, it makes sense that lovebirds were always destined to become a popular favorite.
In fact, one species, the peach-faced lovebird, is probably one of the top three most popular pet parrots kept in the entire world. The only parrots more commonly kept in captivity are the budgerigar (often called the parakeet in the United States) and the cockatiel.
In particular, lovebirds offer several advantages to first-time pet owners.
*Easy to feed on widely available, inexpensive food. With a few updates to the old-fashioned diets, your lovebird has a life expectancy of fifteen years or even longer.
*Once considered a hands-off bird, the rise of breeders who hand-feed baby peach-faced lovebirds means that these birds make a fine apartment pet for people who don't have the space or budget for a
