Chapter 1

Cherry

M orning, Cherry, Leann greeted as I walked towards the nurses’ station.

She was one of the younger nurses, probably a few years older than I was, with curly brown hair and dark eyes. She was friendly, patient, and she also happened to be one of Dad’s favorites.

Morning, Leann, I said. How’s he doing today?

Better, actually, Leann nodded.

Really? Now I’m suspicious.

Leann smiled. He got some good news, she said.

Maybe I should let Dr. Hawkins tell you, Leann said.

I’d rather you did, I said. Go on.

Leann smiled. Dr. Hawkins cleared your dad for transfer to a rehab facility not far from here.

No way, I said. That’s great news ... when will he be transferred there?

End of the week, Leann replied. We’re got a few days left with that old Romeo.

I smiled. Saint Alban’s? I asked hopefully.

Leann paused. Uh ... Davidson Hope, she replied.

Oh.

I had hoped to get Saint Alban’s for dad. It was a much bigger and much nicer rehab facility. They also had the best physical therapists, and they had a number of shrinks with great reputations too. I had made a special request to book a spot there, but the waiting list was long and I knew that my financial statements for the last six months didn’t exactly paint a rosy picture.

It’s a decent rehab facility, Cherry, Leann told me. The therapists are all licensed ... and more importantly, they’re dedicated. Your father will be in good hands.

I swallowed my disappointment and nodded. I know ... and like you said, this is good news.

I headed into Dad’s room and found him sitting upright on his bed. His color had improved a lot in the last week and he was able to speak properly now. Sometimes his words were unclear and slightly slurred, but it was leaps and bounds better than it used to be. I could understand him easily, and that made a difference too. Dad hated having to repeat himself. I think it was just another thing that made him feel inadequate.

I heard the good news, I said, giving him a kiss on the cheek.

I have a spot at Davidson Hope.

You do ... and in a few weeks, you’ll be back at home.

Dad smiled. His smile was different now; it had been changed permanently by the stroke. Now only one half of his mouth went up when he smiled, while the other half stayed permanently frozen in a state of inexpression. It had bothered me a lot in the days after he had woken up from the surgery ... but now I no longer cared. The only thing that mattered was that he was alive. He was talking, he was smiling, and even though he wasn’t exactly walking yet ... he was well on his way to being able to manage on his own. Of course, he would need to rely on a crutch and a walking stick his entire life, but it was better than the alternative.

Not so fast, Dad said, his words slow and measured. There is a long way to go ... before I come home.

I miss you so much, Dad, I said. The house doesn’t feel the same without you.

You look thin, Dad said, his eyes looking me up and down. Have you been eating?

The truth was I hadn’t been eating much of anything lately. My first trimester had been rough. I had been experiencing morning sickness so bad that I kept having stomach cramps because of all the dry heaving. I had looked it up online and apparently lots of women suffered from morning sickness, and most of them actually lost a lot of weight in their first trimester. Google recommended IV drips to try and restore the appetite, but I just didn’t have the money to check into a hospital for a saline drip.

Of course, I said quickly. I eat all the time.

It doesn’t look like it.

I smiled. You’re worrying unnecessarily, I said, trying to keep my tone light.

I had been debating whether to tell Dad about my situation for days now. But the thought of his reaction gave me pause. I didn’t want him to worry about my pregnancy when he had enough on his plate. But the other reason I had for not telling him was that I didn’t know if I was going to keep the baby or not. I had a limited window of time before making the decision would become moot. If I waited much longer, then any hospital I scheduled an abortion in would turn me away. My only remaining choices would be adoption or ... keeping the baby and raising it myself.

I had lost sleep trying to make a decision. I was twenty-one years old. I had only my high school degree to my name. I had a father who desperately needed my help to keep his business afloat, and I nursed hopes of one day being able to go to college and study architecture. Having a baby now didn’t fit into that plan. In fact, having a baby would completely derail that plan, and I wasn’t sure if I was willing to let go of my dreams.

Cherry, honey?

I looked up. Sorry, Dad ... I was just ... thinking.

Of what? dad asked.

Uh ... the bar, I said. We have a new container of lager coming in tomorrow.

Dad’s eyes clouded over with worry. This is a huge burden to place on your shoulders ... the bar ... all these expenses—

Stop it, I said firmly. "This
