INTRODUCTION
It was a miracle. State prosecutors wanted to put me behind prison bars for five years—and my own attorney, who at first said he would have the charges utterly dismissed, actually suggested I should take the deal and leave my baby parentless! But God had different plans. God had a prophetic destiny for me that did not include time behind bars.
Yes, my testimony of surrendering my life to the Lord Jesus Christ begins in a Florida jail. Just months after my life was shattered by a wayward husband who ran off to another country to start a new life without his family, I was arrested for a crime I didn’t commit. It looked as if life as I knew it was coming to an end. But I was really finding a new beginning.
Bill Glass Champions for Life prison ministry entered the jail on an evangelistic mission to set captives free from a life of sin and death. They had people from all walks of life share testimonies of how they came to know the Lord and then shared a message on how we too could be saved. When they made the salvation call, I stood up right there in my county blues
(although the jumpsuit was actually orange) and said yes to the Lord.
Something in my heart immediately shifted. I had stepped into the next stage of my prophetic destiny. I suddenly had a burning passion to serve the Lord. I started a correspondence Bible school and devoured the Word of God. Of course, my particular prophetic destiny could not be accomplished in a county jail—or the prison to which they wanted to send me. And my particular prophetic destiny could not be accomplished without ministry training.
Keep in mind, I wasn’t raised in a church. I didn’t know the first thing about the Word. But I did have a prophetic word over my life. My kindergarten teacher once told my mother I had a writing gift and I could be using that gift to earn a very profitable living. She may or may not have known she meant profitable for the kingdom of God. I’ll talk more about that in the pages of this book.
In some ways I believe our prophetic destiny begins even before we are living for Him. I believe He gives us gifts and talents and opportunities to cultivate them before we know Him. In my case, I was a successful journalist before I got saved. Being a single mother who received no alimony and no child support, my goal was to make as much money as I could to give my daughter, who was now without a father, the best life and education I could give her. I wanted nice houses and cars and comfort.
My paradigm changed when I got saved. All I wanted to do was write for Jesus to profit His kingdom even though I had lost every penny I had defending myself from the bogus charges. Completely vindicated by the legal system, I stepped out of jail and sought to pursue my prophetic destiny. In my fervor to follow Christ’s plan for my life, I reached out to every Christian magazine I could find as soon as I got out of jail.
To my disappointment, the Christian magazines either ignored me or sent me polite rejection letters. I understood. I didn’t know much about God and I didn’t have much to say. All I had was my testimony and zeal. Although I was a few years ahead of God in my pursuit of Christian media, I was on the right track toward fulfilling my prophetic destiny. God saw my pursuit and the desires of my heart to serve Him, and, to make up for the lost years, He swiftly opened doors no man could open.
God soon used me to birth a small, international Christian magazine where I had the opportunity to interview people such as Joyce Meyer, Reinhard Bonnke, Tommy Barnett, and many others who helped shape the foundation of my faith. I also began producing a Christian television program, and I traveled to foreign nations heading up documentary film efforts for missions. All the while, I was leading media efforts on staff at a local church.
Within a few years, I began freelance writing for Charisma magazine. I really thought I had arrived. I thought I’d reached my prophetic destiny (Romans 8:30). Little did I know that just a few years later I would become the official news editor. Again, I thought I had arrived. I thought that was the pinnacle of my prophetic destiny. God must have been laughing especially hard. Little did I know a few years later I’d serve as the online managing editor and help build a major internet magazine before becoming the editor in chief of this venerable publication—in fact, the first-ever female editor in the magazine’s forty-year history. I broke a glass ceiling, but that still wasn’t the pinnacle.
Over the years, I’ve written or been featured in nearly ten Christian books, my work has been translated into Spanish, Portuguese, French, Chinese, Korean—and some of it is even archived in the Assemblies of God’s Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center museum. All that didn’t happen overnight, but it didn’t take a lifetime either. From pagan to international impact in just a few years? Only God could do that—and to Him be all the glory.
The point, though, is not what has happened in my life but how it happened. To walk in the prophetic destiny God ordained for my life, I had to allow Him to shift my mind-sets and purify my heart to agree with His agendas. Often, that sounded like this: Not my will but Yours be done, Lord.
But that wasn’t enough to get me where I am today and won’t be enough to take me where He wants me to go next.
I had to—and still have to—be a student of the Word and find mentors and tutors more mature than me to offer guidance and correction. I had to overcome the demons from my past. I had to wait for His perfect timing (instead of rushing out with works of the flesh). I had to refuse to give up in the face of demonic backlash that seemed to rage against every area of my life. It wasn’t always easy as a single mother, but His grace is sufficient.
There’s not a saint alive who doesn’t have a deep longing in their heart to do something great for God. I believe God puts that desire in us. What’s missing is a clear understanding of how to work with the Holy Spirit to bear fruit for the kingdom and to gain eternal rewards—to hear Him say, Well done, good and faithful servant. . . . Enter into the joy of your lord
(Matthew 25:21).
Walking in Your Prophetic Destiny looks at how to discover the seed of your destiny, water it, pull the weeds, allow the Son to shine on it, and ultimately see it come to life and grow into something larger than yourself—and then sustain it as He takes you from glory to glory.
Whether you are a homemaker, a CEO, a lay minister, or a full-time pastor, this book blends the practical with the spiritual to help you understand God’s unique call on your life and how to travel the road to your prophetic destiny. I’ll use examples from my personal life throughout this book.
My prayer is you won’t dismiss the areas that seem familiar to you—or the areas that challenge you. My prayer is that you would determine this in your heart:
No matter what it takes, no matter how long it takes, no matter how hard it is, and no matter who doesn’t like it, I will seek God’s will and move in God’s ways and God’s timing for His glory. Amen.
CHAPTER 1
WHAT AM I CALLED TO DO?
When I was five years old, my kindergarten teacher assigned us to create a small book, complete with a story, artwork, and bound cover. It was quite a task to assign to a five-year-old, but I took it on with determination and joy. My story was about a little girl and little boy who set out to rocket to the moon in a spaceship—and succeeded! (Seems I was always a dreamer.)
During a parent-teacher conference, my kindergarten teacher, Ms. Greene, prophesied to my mother concerning my future. Well, she may not have known she was prophesying, but she absolutely was. She told my mother I would most definitely become a writer when I grew up.
Of course, the Enemy fought against that impromptu prophecy with all he had. I always loved reading—perhaps because as a child I was laid up in the hospital and was later confined to bed in a full body cast twice. I didn’t have much else to do but read, draw, and watch I Love Lucy. But the Enemy’s injurious attack turned into a blessing, according to Romans 8:28. I read several books a week throughout my childhood and even into my teenage years. I developed a love for reading and learning.
But I still didn’t like writing.
In fact, I hated writing.
I was in advanced English classes throughout high school. I clearly had communication giftings and aptitudes. But I hated writing so much that I would wait until after a term paper was due to start it, and then only completed it to avoid failing the class. I always turned in my writing assignments late and took two downgrades as a penalty. Even still—even with a rushed presentation—I would have received an A if I had turned it in on time. Writing just didn’t interest me. I wanted to be a psychologist.
When I got to college, I decided to join the school newspaper. Mind you, I still had no ambition to write news stories but thought of it as a social opportunity to meet people in a new city. But I discovered I was good at writing. I enjoyed writing. I developed a passion for writing. Soon I rose to assistant news editor, then news editor, then features editor, and then managing editor of the college paper. I wrote with various pseudonyms because there was never enough content to fill the pages. I did it all, from A to Z. And my boyfriend was the chief photographer, so we made a great team.
I started my writing career in the early days of the internet. My first published work beyond internet blogs was in Chicken Soup for the Woman’s Soul. Over the years, I’ve written for the New York Times, the Associated Press, and many other reputable newspapers and magazines. Beyond journalism, I’ve written poems, screenplays, billboard advertisements, marketing copy for Fortune 500 firms, TV commercial scripts, press releases, brochures, website copy, technical manuals, technology books, real estate books, and more. I’ve served as a project manager, editor, and ghostwriter.
As I often say, if it can be written, I’ve probably written it. The Enemy fought my kindergarten teacher’s prophecy by planting seeds that writing was a task. I planned to be a psychologist, then a filmmaker, but the Lord had a different plan. It reminds me of Proverbs 19:21: There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the Lord’s counsel—that will stand.
A then-twenty-two-year-old prophetic word marked the first half of my career. As of the writing of this manuscript, I’ve written more than thirty books, most of them bestsellers. The kindergarten teacher’s prophecy has come to pass with fruit that remains.
While I was working for the Associated Press in 2002, the Lord prophesied directly to me, You will impact the whole world with your pen. I wrote it down on a piece of paper I found in my car and stuck it up on my refrigerator. It seemed impossible, but all things are possible to the one who believes (Mark 9:23). By 2012, my articles had been read by at least one person in every inhabitable nation. Everywhere I go in the world, people tell me they have read my articles and books.
DISCOVERING YOUR GOD-ORDAINED PURPOSE
Maybe you haven’t been receiving prophetic words since you were five years old. Unless you grew up in a prophetic church, you probably didn’t. Maybe you’ve never had an angelic encounter to reveal the next steps in your life. Most people don’t. Maybe Jesus has never visited your bedroom and laid out an action plan for you. How, then, can you discover your God-ordained purpose?
Purpose discovery seems to be a sticking point for many believers. In other words, this is where Christians get stuck. Shockingly, a study from Barna and Summit Ministries reports 54 percent of practicing Christians agree that no one can know for certain what meaning and purpose there is to life.
¹ (That’s a bold, sad statement.) Yet 90 percent of Christians in another Barna study agree having a clear purpose is very desirable.
² Can you see the schism? No wonder so many Christians seem just as miserable as the world.
The late and great Bahamian Bible teacher Myles Munroe was right when he said, The greatest tragedy in life is not death, but a life without a purpose.
³ So how do we find our purpose so we can get on the right track to our prophetic destiny? There have been many books dedicated to this question, but if you hope to walk in the fullness of your purpose, you need to press into answering this question for yourself and be confident God has spoken to you.
That said, as a baseline, we know, We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them
(Ephesians 2:10 esv). We are to know God and make Him known by spreading the gospel. But there is a unique purpose for your life—and that purpose does not change (Isaiah 14:24, 27; Ephesians 1:11).
If you are overwhelmed with warfare or confused as you search, let this encourage you: As hard as he may try, the Enemy of your soul cannot completely circumvent your purpose. Joseph spent some time in the pit and in prison, but he ultimately ended up ruling Egypt as second-in-command to Pharaoh and saved many lives in a time of worldwide famine. Even Job, in the midst of his darkest moments, declared: I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You
(Job 42:2). We know the end of Job’s story. God gave him double for his trouble (vv. 12–17).
In my book Dream Wild, I ask a series of simple questions that has helped many people unlock their purpose:
1.Imagine for a moment that money is not an issue. What would you do?
2.What would you do if you could not fail?
3.What would you do if you had no fears? What if you didn’t fear the disapproval of your family and
