    Prologue

Standing in the corner of the club, Yancey MacCafferty decided he didn’t want to do what he had been doing to survive anymore. Running away from home had to have been the dumbest thing he’d ever done. Maybe if he’d searched harder for his brother, he wouldn’t have got into the mess he was in. Brody was out there somewhere and Yancey believed he’d come back for him. But he couldn’t take one more day in his aunt’s house. He’d given into an impulse and had taken off.

Next thing he knew, he was hustling to make enough money to afford a place to stay and food to eat. But now Yancey didn’t want to do it anymore. He just didn’t know how to stop.

    What’s wrong, Yancey?

He looked up into a pair of big brown eyes, and smiled. I’m trying to figure out how to get out of here, Juan. How’s it going tonight? No one’s causing you trouble, are they?

Juan Romanos was a sixteen-year-old who looked eighteen, with a fake ID and a body not quite done filling out. But the guys who frequented the club they were in didn’t care about that. Juan was a hot piece of ass, and they wanted to be the first to bust his cherry.

Yancey had seen their lust the moment Juan and his friends had walked into the place a few weekends ago, and he wasn’t going to allow the innocence he saw in Juan’s eyes be destroyed by some horny asshole. So he’d introduced himself, and had taken Juan under his wing. Yancey did his best to teach Juan the right ways to approach a guy, and the way to do it without finding himself in situations where he could get in trouble or even worse hurt.

Juan and his friends were fast learners. After the first two visits they made to the club, Yancey had stopped worrying about them. He kept his eyes out for them, and kept the worst offenders away. Over the weeks, he and Juan had grown close, and tonight, when the decisions Yancey was about to make could change the course of his life, Yancey realised one important thing.

The first time he’d ever looked into Juan’s eyes he’d lost his heart to someone else for the only time in his entire life. Somehow Yancey knew time wouldn’t change how he felt about the boy standing in front of him. Neither would the distance that their lives put between them.

Yancey had found his home and he’d do anything he had to do not to lose it again.

    * * * *

    A few weekends ago

Juan shook off the man’s hand. I don’t want to dance with you, dude. Just leave me alone.

Come on. I know a young stud like you wants a part of this. The stranger grinned at him while gesturing towards his own well-muscled chest.

While Juan might have found the man attractive looks-wise, he definitely wanted nothing to do with him after hearing the guy talk. Juan might be young, but he knew what he found sexy in a man, and arrogance wasn’t it.

I don’t want a part of you. Thanks for offering, though.

Juan turned away, looking for his friends. They’d all headed to the dance floor as soon as they’d hit the club. The older man looking to score had only stopped Juan. It wasn’t the first time a guy had come on to Juan, but it was the first time one wouldn’t take no for an answer.

After finding his group, he joined them and they danced to the pounding beat. Juan glanced around the crowd, noting all the good-looking men gyrating on the floor and those who mingled around the edges.

From time to time, he spotted a tall blond man who looked to be maybe a few years older than Juan. The blond wandered through the crowd, smiling and chatting with different men. Sometimes Juan would lose track of him, presumably he’d gone to the bathrooms or something, then he would appear again on the other side of the club.

He didn’t know what it was, but something about the man intrigued Juan. It wasn’t just his good looks, but the way he carried himself like he knew he was the alpha dog and the rest of the men were simply his minions. Why Juan found the blond’s confidence sexy, but the other man’s arrogance annoying, he didn’t know.

Juan jumped when a warm body pressed up against his back and ass, and some man gripped his hips. He broke away from him, and turned to find it was the first guy he’d run into that night.

Jesus, man. I said no. Can’t you take a hint?

Sorry I came on too strong. You’re just so hot. Come on. I’ll buy you a drink. That’s all. The guy held out his hand. My name is Marcus.

Juan shook Marcus’ hand. I’m Juan. I guess a drink would be okay. As long as you realise that’s all we’re doing.

Sure, man. Marcus slapped Juan on the back, then led the way to the bar.

There was a large crowd of people around the bar, vying for attention from the bartenders. Juan really didn’t care what Marcus got him to drink. He probably wouldn’t drink it anyway. He knew better than to accept a drink from some stranger. Just because he was a guy didn’t mean he couldn’t be drugged or anything like that.

Hey, kid, you don’t want to mess around with Marcus.

Juan glanced over his shoulder to see the blond he’d been watching the whole night standing next to him. I wasn’t planning on messing around with him. I’m just here to dance.

The blond snorted. You might think that’s all you’re going to do, but you keep spending time with Marcus, and you’ll find yourself in one of the bathrooms doing things you don’t really want to do. Trust me.

I told him I’d have a drink with him, Juan informed him, already regretting it.

I know, but don’t worry. I’ll get you off the hook. Marcus has wanted a piece of me for a long time now. I’ll give him a chance at a nibble. The blond leaned over and kissed Juan’s cheek. I’m Yancey, by the way.

I’m Juan, and thanks for helping me out. He liked how the feel of Yancey’s lips seemed to linger on his skin. He took a deep breath, and Yancey’s musky scent of sweat and some kind of cologne filled his nose.

No problem, kid. Maybe I’ll catch you around sometime, and we can share a dance or something. Yancey winked at him.

Before Juan could say anything, Yancey was gone. He watched Yancey intercept Marcus, and saw him work whatever kind of magic he had. Marcus didn’t even spare Juan a look when Yancey led him away.

Juan wasn’t too upset about that. Some instinct told him Marcus was looking for far more than sharing a drink or a dance with Juan. That wasn’t something Juan was interested in at the moment. He wanted to dance and have fun. He knew that most teenagers were looking for sex, but even a one-night stand complicated things, and he wasn’t looking for complicated right now.

Yancey glanced back at him and winked. Juan might not have been looking for anything more than a fun night of dancing and music, but his chest tightened because of Yancey’s smile. It was a feeling he’d never felt before that night.

When he returned home and lay in his bed, he stared up at the ceiling and thought about Yancey. He wanted to know about the guy, and he wanted to understand why it felt like he’d met his future that night when Yancey had kissed his cheek.

    Chapter One

    Thirteen years later

    You have everything?

After tossing his last bag into the back of his truck, Yancey turned to look at his brother. Yes. The rest of my stuff you can ship out after I get settled.

Brody didn’t look convinced. Are you sure this is the right thing to do? You could open your own practice around here.

I know, but Juan isn’t here, and it’s time we start being together. I still love him. Yancey shrugged. I’m not sure if you and Tony hoped it was puppy love between us, or if you just wanted us both to see the world before we settled down with each other.

Would it be wrong to say a little of both? Brody smiled. I think I was the one who hoped it was just puppy love, and for no other reason than that I didn’t believe people could fall in love so early in life.

I was the one who wanted you and Juan to taste the world outside our ranch before you chose each other. I could see how solid the two of you were with each other, but you needed to learn about the way things work out in the real world. Tony used air quotes when he said real.

Yancey laughed. You probably didn’t think it would lead to Juan living all the way across the country, doing something kind of foreign to you.

Tony slid his arm around Brody’s waist, then leaned into his side. If he were an investment banker, then that would be foreign to me. He rides horses, just in a fancier saddle than I do. So we’re closer than you’d think.

Does Juan know you’re coming? Brody still didn’t look convinced that it was the best move on Yancey’s part.

Yancey shook his head. No. He only knows that I’m coming out for a visit. He doesn’t have any clue that I’ll be living a mile down the road from the stables he works at. I didn’t want him to know until I could tell him face-to-face. I’m hoping he’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Knowing Juan, he’ll go crazy about it. There’s no doubt in my mind that Juan loves you just as much now as he did when he was sixteen.

Yancey wasn’t so sure about that. There had been times when Juan had missed important events because he’d had to ride in different shows. Yancey tried to be supportive—Juan was building a career, and needed to put on a good showing in order to get clients. Yet lately, Yancey felt like Juan was putting his career before their relationship, and he didn’t want that to happen.

That was why he’d chosen to buy out a retiring veterinarian whose practice was only a mile away from the barn Juan rode and worked at in Virginia. He wanted to be close to the man he loved so they could get reacquainted. He needed to learn who this new Juan was, and see if their love would be strong enough to survive the changes in both of them.

You better head out. Don’t want to throw you off schedule. Take your time though. There’s no need to rush, right? Brody hugged him tight.

No. I’m leaving here early, and I told Dr Behan I would at his place in two weeks, so I have plenty of time. Might make a stop or two along the way. Yancey absorbed the strength in Brody’s embrace.

All his life he’d looked up to his older brother, and relied on him to help make everything right in his world. Now it was time for Yancey to branch out on his own.

You’ll make sure to call us when you stop for the night, right? Brody checked.

I will call you every day, Brody, but you know what? You have to let me go at some point. Yancey smiled. You do realise that from the time I was fifteen until I turned eighteen, I was pretty much on my own, and I took care of myself. I haven’t lost that ability. Though this time I won’t have to sell myself if I run out of money.

Brody grimaced at the reminder of what Yancey had been doing when they’d found each other again. Yancey knew his brother hated the idea of him being a rent boy, but it had been the only way Yancey had been able to make enough money to survive on the streets of Austin.

While Yancey wasn’t particularly proud of what he’d done, he wasn’t embarrassed by it. It was what it was, and he couldn’t change the past. He’d learnt his lesson about running away.

Tony wrapped his arm around Brody’s waist, giving Yancey a bright smile. Don’t worry, I have ways of keeping him distracted.

Yancey rolled his eyes. I don’t want to know any of those ways, Tony. I’m perfectly happy being ignorant of your sex life.

You might get some good tips for when you and Juan get together, Tony joked, wiggling his eyebrows.

For God’s sake, can we not talk about this? Brody looked put out by the whole conversation.

I’m just saying that Brody won’t be calling you every hour to find out how you’re doing on your trip. Tony tightened his grip on Brody. He’s dealing with ‘empty nest’ syndrome, and you haven’t even left the driveway.

Yancey opened his truck door, then slid behind the wheel and shut the door. He was excited to be setting off on his trip—he’d been looking forward to heading out east after he’d settled the deal with Dr Behan.

But really, it was finally getting to spend as much time with Juan as he wanted that got him thrilled to be starting out on the long drive.

Hey, don’t forget to stop and say goodbye to Les and Randy, Tony reminded him.
