Preface
The alien spaceship was visiting the Solar System hundreds of thousands of years ago. They were on a survey mission of this arm of the Galaxy and were on a trip which would last two hundred and fifty years. Since the average lifespan of this race was two thousand years this was a long mission but not unheard of.
Earth had been picked to explore because telescopes and AI programs from a thousand light years away picked Earth and fifty other planets to survey for life. Most planets had life, but only one out of one thousand had life which was or might become intelligent beings capable of building a technological civilization.
The Engineer reported to the Captain We have a problem sir. Our reactor needs some rare earths and the alloy we need to print to replace some critical parts is in limited supply. We don’t have much on the ship
. The Captain replied Well then, let’s follow standard procedures and find an asteroid we can mine for these metals.
This was a very standard procedure and the ship carried robotic miners and advanced three dimensional printers and smelters. They carried everything which might be needed to create new parts for the ship as well as print biological organs as needed for the crew.
The Captain assigned the astronomy section to find some asteroids to mine. A survey of the solar system found a ring of asteroids which might fill the bill. Most systems had asteroids somewhere, even if they were further out in what we now call the Oort Cloud. Light spectrums of the asteroids showed some promising candidates and the ship headed to the location of a possible source of rare earths. The Engineer and several of his crewmen took a small mining ship to setup the mining equipment and robots to mine and transfer the metals needed. The work was almost done when the mining equipment hit a pocket of gas which exploded outward killing one of the crewmen and destroying the mining ship. The explosion buried the body under dozens of meters of rock and dust. The crew did some searching with various probes but couldn’t extract the body without destroying it.
The Captain finally called off the recovery effort and the ship left the area and resumed the rest of their survey of the Solar System and then proceeded on to other stars.
Many hundreds of thousands of years passed and the alien’s suit and the ruins of the equipment and small mining ship were slowly pelted with space dust and micrometeoroids.
Over thousands of years other small asteroids smashed into the one where the dead crewman was buried until his desiccated body was finally exposed and waiting to be discovered…
Growing up in 2250 A.D.
Earth in the year 2250 A.D. had a population of 20 billion. The number of humans had mostly stabilized in the 22nd century as societies became more advanced and it became too costly for people to raise more than one or two children. So the numbers of the populace were constrained both by population laws and economics to limit their family sizes significantly. However, those limits were now being tested as resources were being used up too fast and even with the Solar System being opened up not enough materials were being received on Earth from those new resources. Resource conflicts were on the rise which led to a lot of political tension between countries and large multi-nationals.
The Solar System now provided lots of industry and materials to help feed Earth and provided industrial materials and manufacturing capabilities. In orbit around the Earth were huge farms where various food plants were raised using hydroponics, and industries were established to manufacture many devices by advanced three dimensional printing plants.
There was of course still food grown on Earth and much was manufactured there, but the cost of Space access was now low enough to build a lot of facilities in orbit. In addition, there were now colonies all over the Solar System. Thousands of people lived in the colonies on the Lunar South Pole, on Mars, and on various facilities throughout the Solar System out to as far as the Oort Cloud.
The availability of compact fusion rockets and fuel mined from Jupiter and Saturn in the form of Tritium allowed rockets to move around the system at one gravity or more and shrink travel times from years to weeks and days.
The Asteroid Belt had become the main source for metals in the Solar System, and had its own smelters. Purified metals we often sent back to Earth’s orbit to the processing plants where they were further refined and used as the base materials for many types of products.
Overall, the solar economy was very vibrant and scientists were even talking about sending probes and maybe generation ships to the nearest stars. The food and products produced in space now provided over half of what the Earth economy needed to support all its billions of people.
Individual super blocks of countries still existed like the North American Block, the Euro Block and the South East Asian block. Each block still maintained their own nationalities but those were being subsumed more and more into the economic and co-defenses of the blocks themselves.
It was into this age that Jason Argos was born. He was the only child of two parents in the North American block and was born naturally. The alternative being babies who were born in external womb crèches—of which about twenty five percent were.
Jason’s parents were both involved in finance and pretty wealthy for the times. They owned their own smart home in upstate New York, and a vacation condo on one of the Space Stations which served the huge tourist industry for those who could afford it.
Jason attend private schools growing up and in college attended an Ivy League school—which was only for the elites because only they could afford that for their children. Most kids attended colleges online with lectures and course work done over the internet.
Jason learned geology and engineering in college because someday he wanted to use his skills in Space to make a Big Find
. Big finds in the Asteroid Belt were legendary. He also just had a passion for seeing new places and exploring.
He took Tai Kwan Do and other martial arts to increase his skills for defending himself. He had read that in the Belt many areas were lawless and one needed to be able to defend themselves from attacks. As his martial arts training proceeded he got a black belt in several arts and learned how to kill by striking opponents in different parts of their bodies. An example would include striking a person’s nose hard enough to drive it into their brain—which was a kill shot.
He also learned to shoot and became pretty accurate with handguns and rifles. Jason also took some police courses to learn to pick some targets and avoid other innocent ones. Overall, he had become a dangerous fighter even though he looked just like a regular teenager.
4.0 Jason’s Teenage Years
Jason wanted to start a business so spent his teenage years in learning what types of businesses interested him. Online games had developed a lot in the last few centuries and some of them were used by kids and adults to simulate how it would be to own and run businesses in certain types of industries. His big industry of interest was Space business because it was the huge and growing business of the twenty third century.
The romance of prospecting for asteroids and building multi-billion dollar business in the asteroid belt was like the Gold Rush of the forty-niners in the nineteenth century. Many kids like him wanted to figure out how to get famous and make a fortune in this space based business. There were even game competitions of game entrepreneurs working to become the most successful. Jason did fairly well, but there were some international stars who won all the competitions. They were mostly funded by huge companies who funded their business ideas. Business games were known as great places to find budding business builders and to find the newest and most innovative ideas. Jason was pretty absorbed in this game and didn’t really keep up much with the outside world.
Jason was eighteen years old and most kids of wealthy parents lived at home in this time until they got married. Then they moved out with help from their families to get their own places. His parent’s home was pretty luxurious and Jason spent most of his time in his room. So one day he was in the game and zoning out to everything around him when he heard this big commotion downstairs with his parents doing a lot of yelling. He went to take a look and the police were there and handcuffing his Dad! He asked what was going on and his Mom and the police told him his Dad was involved in an international Ponzi scheme. Yes frauds like that even went on in the twenty third century although most of the money was transferred electronically and was probably in a blockchain currency. (Like Bitcoin of two hundred years ago).
To make a long story short his dad was convicted after six months and sent to a real prison. You had to really be bad to go to a physical lockup jail in that era. His Mom sold the house a few months later and they moved into a tiny apartment in a small neighborhood. His sisters found boyfriends and didn’t spend any time at home. He just wanted the hell out of there.
Fortunately, he still had some Aunts and Uncles who he thought might feel sorry for him and also be interested in his ideas to help fund his business venture.
*****
He was also worried about life on Earth. There were new tensions among different countries and many violent terrorist groups had grown up in recent years. Some of them were just focused on doing as much destruction as they could. This was another reason to find a life off Earth to avoid some type of great disaster which he felt would occur in his lifetime.
5.0 Starting a Business
His business idea wasn’t incredibility original but was workable. The idea was to spend as little as possible to outfit him with an asteroid mining ship. He had some ideas to save money and cut the price of doing this into a third of what most people spent.
He had read a lot about mining in the belt and had learned all the technology for ships and the tools used to extract and refine ore.
He approached his Uncle Xerxes with a written plan and sat down to discuss it. They sat in Xerxes study which was full of old oak paneling and which had understated lighting. Xerxes was his father’s oldest brother (There were three siblings) and had always been friendly to him. After hellos he stated the following:
Jason, I loved your father but he was always reckless. I warned him a couple of times that his ventures would get him into trouble with the law but he never listened to me. So now I see he left his family in the lurch, including you. So tell me what I can do for you?
He replied Uncle, I have business proposition and I’ve written a business plan for it. Like any business there is risk, but I’m confident I can do it.
So Jason started explaining the highlights of his plan and this Uncle nodded his head and asked various questions.
The essence of the plan was to
