    ANYTHING AT ALL

"The R’H’anian chose to marry the heir of the Lourda house, forever tarnishing the friendship between the Loryn and the Lourda heir. It was only in the darkest hours of the tragedy that befell the Loryn house that the last heir reached out and begged for Ta’Lourda’s help. Even before Ta’Lourda arrived with his fleet of ships, the Loryn heir vanished. In the years that followed, there were many who doubted Ta’Lourda’s claim that he held the isle in service to the missing Loryn heir, believing instead that he held it in service to himself." —An Abbreviated History of the Great Isle, 8711

    Ani’Hain

    Three Years Ago

Yestrille woke to the warmth of Xa’Bourdani’s arms around his chest and soft breathing at the back of his neck. He savored the comfortable weight of those arms for one long moment before sighing and wiggling himself free from the tangle of bedding and bodies.

Brylan’s soft snort followed him out of the bed, and from the corner of his eye Yestrille caught sight of Brylan on the other side of Xa’Bourdani, flopping over onto his back where the early morning sun streaked across his resting face.

Clothes were scattered across the floor, and Yestrille winced. He’d been in a hurry to join Brylan and Xa’Bourdani on the bed, and he’d failed to take proper care of their clothes—and his.

He tugged his skirt from underneath one of Xa’Bourdani’s boots and found his shirt half under the bedside table, one sleeve turned inside out.

He took his clothes and trudged toward the bathing room, staggering through a jaw-popping yawn halfway there.

It was as he closed the doors behind him that he saw Xa’Bourdani roll over and pull Brylan close, replacing Yestrille in his arms without even waking up. Xa’Bourdani was deeply in love with Brylan, and even though Yestrille had been invited to join them often, he would never be more than he was.

Yestrille sighed. There were others he could enjoy, but he would miss sharing this bed.

    But it was time.

He had known for a while that he was going to have to stop coming to Xa’Bourdani and Brylan for fun, but seeing them alone in the early morning hours reminded him of what he was missing in his own life. Yestrille enjoyed their time together, but it left him no time to find love of his own.

He would begin the search before his elder-grandmother disowned him for lack of trying. She’d been hinting that it was time for him to find a husband for several months. He could only be grateful that she knew him well enough to know better than to suggest he find a wife. Yestrille would never make a good husband to a wife. His younger siblings would have to keep the family line going by marrying for children.

He would marry for love, or he wouldn’t marry
