Apoyado en un vasto archivo inédito y en la correspondencia de Löwith con los grandes protagonistas de la cultura europea (Heidegger, Jaspers, Strauss, Arendt, Bultmann, Voegelin, Gadamer, Horkheimer, Marcuse y Habermas, entre otros), el libro reconstruye la vida de Karl Löwith desde los años de su cercanía con Husserl, Weber, el círculo de George y, sobre todo, Heidegger -de quien Löwith fue primero alumno y luego uno de sus más agudos críticos- hasta el exilio impuesto por el nazismo, primero en Italia, luego en Japón y finalmente en los Estados Unidos, y su retorno a la Alemania de posguerra.
