Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Staffel 8, Band 1: Die Rückkehr der Jägerin

I wish I could give this a 3 1/2. It had moments where I felt I could hear the characters of the TV show speaking through the script, and others where I was confused or it seemed strained. I liked it enough I've ordered the next!

This was one of my favorite tv shows and this volume takes up right where the show left off, the writing is superb and the art work top notch as the characters look like the actors. The cover art is especially good.

Having created 1000's of slayers at the end of the series run, Buffy now finds herself as a general in an all girl Army. Zander serves as her second in command, and Andrew and Giles are also on hand. However, the US Military is not pleased with Buffy's milita, and recruit Amy and Jonathan (still skinless) to destroy the Slayers. Fans of the series will eat this up with a spoon. Those unfamiliar with the Buffy-verse will be lost. Much like Whedon's other comic sequel for Firefly, this title is preaching to the choir. While I wish that Whedon would quit using the sex-as-transformation metaphor, there is no denying that this is Buffy at the top of her form.

The first volume of Joss Whedon's ongoing Season Eight.As far as series premieres go, this was good. Not spectacular, but certainly good enough that I'm excited about where things will go from here. I think Joss did a good job of bringing us up to date with these characters and showing what he's willing to do with the series in this new medium. We see where they're all at now, (with some hints as to what they've done in the year since the Slayers became legion, which I personally hope will be explored in future story arcs), and watch as he pushes them in some entirely new directions. The final story sits outside the arc, giving us a glimpse of what life is like for some of the other Slayers and demonstrating Joss's willingness to think outside the Scoobies.Artwise, things are looking good. Jeanty does some good work with these characters; everyone is instantly recognizable. The panelling helps the story flow smoothly, with occasional jumps that mimic television in some interesting ways. And the "special effects"? Ooooh boy, is Joss willing to think big now that he doesn't have to worry about paying for the fancy stuff! There are some very effective scenes in here.(Some weird stuff, too, but that's allowed. It wouldn't be Buffy without the weird stuff).All in all, I enjoyed it. As I said, I wasn't blown away, but I'm very excited as to where things could go from here. I trust I won't be disappointed.Highly recommended to Buffy fans. Others, you're probably better off watching the show before you attempt to read this.

I'm kind of disappointed--the comic version was hard to follow and it seemed like much more of an emphasis was placed on 'ooh, how much skin can we show' than how much character development & plot we can have. There's no development, the plot is very fuzzy and short, and we're just given more questions and no answers. I want to know what happened to Willow and Dawn and Xander and what the gang's been up to, instead of more bloody battles and what the heck, FAIRIES? I mean...there's demons and that kind of supernatural, but I really really didn't see fairies coming into this thing. Still, I have to say it's awesome, cause it's BUFFY, of course, and Joss is an incredibly sweet writer to actually want to continue the series, I just wish it was still televised or at least a movie, not a comic book, regular book would be great, too! Comic book is just too many pictures, not enough plot for me, but I'll still be following, of course, and I'm off to order Volume 2, now.

This is the official sequel to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer television show. Some of the stories are written by the series creator, Joss Whedon. The story arc of this eighth, and untelevised, season of Buffy is “The Long Way Home,” referring to the large hole that once was Sunnydale. In season seven, Willow used her magical powers to unlock the slayer ability in all the potentials around the world. They have all banded together with Buffy as their leader. A military agency considers them a “terrorist” threat and recruits two enemies from the slayer’s past to stop them.As this is just the beginning of a full season, characters are being reintroduced and storylines are just getting started. Watching these characters again in new adventures is really exciting but the story is somewhat incomplete. All of the episodes will need to be read together to get a full picture with a clear resolution in the last episode; just like a television show.

I wasn't sure about the whole graphic novel format, but I picked it up regardless, as I wanted more Buffy!!There are some interesting storylines introduced here, and its wonderful to "hear" the voices of some of my favourite characters ever, once again. I want more!!

As a long time fan of the television series, I was VERY excited to get a season eight. As I thought, this graphic novel delivered in a big way. It featured the return of most of my favorite characters, and the non return of characters I hated (Kennedy). The end left me wanting more, but I suppose that was the point! Overall, a great story.

I loved it. And now, I hate the waiting...

Overall it was well done, but I have no familiarity with the series or characters, and honestly no interest in them either. That made it difficult for me to enjoy or even understand in some places.

It moves too quickly - some things that might have taken entire episodes on TV go by in just a page or two. Other than that, it's completely awesome.

It has been decades since I have read a comic book. The medium has changed-- these deserve the term graphic novel. The chapters are beautifully illustrated with artwork that does look like the actors. The story is fascinating, and it does follow directly from the results of season 7. The individual chapters, like a series of episodes, are internally consistent, and show a facet of the overall story arc. The story is consistent with the fifth season of Angel, as well. But still, it is not as satisfying as either a television episode, or a novel. There are relatively few monsters, and no vampires, but our main characters are beautifully drawn, and they are doing fascinating things. Recommended for Buffy fans, but readers really need a background in the whole mythos.

Picks up where the TV show left off. The characters retain their charm and wit, and it's interesting to see what happens.

This graphic novel begins what would be season eight of the TV series under the guidance of the series creator, Joss Whedon. What can I say? Fifty-something year-old men like Buffy and I like almost everything Joss Whedon has done.

Summary: After the cataclysmic end of Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 7, our favorite petite blond evil-fighter finds herself with a whole host of new problems. After Willow gave every potential in the world full Slayer strength, Buffy has relocated to Scotland with Xander as her new pseudo-Watcher, while members of her team are busily training the new Slayers around the world. Averting the apocalypse has never earned our gang more than a temporary rest, though, and Buffy still has to deal with problems both normal (Dawn's growing up, causing all kinds of sisterly tension) and supernatural (Dawn's really grown *up* - about forty feet up, and she refuses to talk to Buffy about the reason.) Plus, in the course of daily monster-fighting, Buffy stumbles across hints of a new organization, called Twilight, which will bring together new force and some old enemies in order to bring down the Slayer and her friends. This volume also includes a one-off issue titled "The Chain", which explores the idea that even if there are now thousands of Slayers, the name of Buffy Summers still carries some weight.Review: True to the title, this really is exactly like another season of Buffy, only with an unlimited budget to pay for special effects and guest stars. The story structure is the same: following multiple storylines that all feed into the overall arc. The editing is the same: cuts between scenes where the previous scene's dialogue feeds into the next image. The language is the same: the snarky sense of humor is recognizeably Joss Whedon, and the rhythms of speech are recognizably Buffy. The characters are the same: they all sound like themselves, and for the most part look like themselves (Giles, Willow, and Xander are all great; personally, I was less-impressed with Buffy herself, and Andrew's almost unrecognizable in some panels.) The story moves quickly, and you have to pay attention to stay on top of what's going on... and I'm sure there are plenty of clues hidden in the dialogue and the drawings that I didn't catch. Overall, though, comics and Joss Whedon and Buffy are a natural fit, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here. 4 out of 5 stars.Recommendation: My recommendation isn't going to be worth a whole lot, here, Buffy fans should definitely read it, even if they're not really into comic books; non-Buffy fans should absolutely NOT start here.

Wrapping up loose ends from Season 7, developing a new world of empowered slayers, and giving me more Willow, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8: The Long Way Home is my new favorite thing. My only complaint is that Jeanty's artwork makes it rather hard to tell who anyone is when they are not introduced. Except for Willow, the characters here only slightly resemble the actors who originated the part. I had an especially hard time with Andrew. Joss, however, proves that he is a genius of all media, writing graphic novel just as well as he does television and movie scripts. What I would love is to have novelisations of these books, as I'm not terribly well-versed in reading the Graphic Novel style and had a hard time following it. This is more my failing, than the book's, though, so no points off. (As though I could rate anything even remotely related to Joss Whedon anything less than full marks.)

This set of comics picks up where the series left off. Each issue was originally published separately and issues 1-5 were gathered together to form this volume. After the fall of Sunnydale, Buffy is leading the new slayers in an all-out world-wide war against all things demonic. Giles and Andrew are all helping teams of slayers across the world to find and kill demons. Buffy and Xander are leading a team in the thick of the action in Scotland. Willow has been off with Kennedy and everyone has been waiting her return. As they fight, they are unaware that an even bigger threat – of the human variety – is biding its time and preparing an attack.This set was written by Joss Whedon and contains many of the characteristics of good Buffy dialog. The characters are true to form, but it might be hard for anyone who is not terribly familiar with the series to keep track of everyone. Some characters that were thought to be long gone even make an appearance. The stories were not always perfectly developed, but the dialog and show references make up for it. The Buffy television show had such an open-ended final episode that it is nice to see the creator’s take on what happened next.

Awesome! I will be smiling all day, my life is actually better now that I have read this. it is so comforting to go back and visit old friends, to see that they're doing OK, they haven't been forgotten.And I see wonderful stories in the future of this series. And good grief, The Chain made me so very sad.The artwork across all of the stories is very enjoyable - characters look enough like themselves that it isn't jarring, and look different enough that it feels like a bit of time has passed, and people have changed.Yay Buffy!

It's been very pleasing to read a follow up to Buffy The Vampire Slayer as this was one of my favourite shows for seven years, and it continues to be even now. This was a wonderful start to the series of graphic novels, and I'm really looking forward to reading the others that will follow. A must for any diehard fan of the TV show...

I'm not going to try to sound all scholarly or like an actual reviewer up in here; Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight is like crack-laced popcorn to me, and it's impossible for me to be objective. The original teevee series meant a lot to me, and Season Eight feels like an extension of that series -- same cleverness, familiar characters, Monster-of-the-Week style subplots with a Major Big Bad hovering over it all -- and I can't help but love it.

I don't know if non-fans would think as highly of it -- maybe having the characters' voices and mannerisms in my head already is an advantage? -- but I finished the first five TPBs in one night, and would have kept going if my library owned the others in the series.

If you thought Buffy ended after seven seasons, you're wrong. Buffy and the gang, well most of it anyway, are back. Of course, the gang's a bit bigger these days, what with there now being over a thousand slayers and all. Now though, the enemy might be harder to fight in a new way. It could be that humans, those the slayer was made to protect will be a bit uncomfortable with all of these superwomen running around. Backfire.

This first volume was pretty much like watching Buffy, only with subtitles. The characters look eerily like the actors that portrayed them in the show, only just a little off. Honestly, that is both cool and creepy. Some time has passed since the end of the show, so the slayer army has been organized, Willow's been coming and going doing magic things and Dawn has made a poor dating choice (who's shocked?) and is now a giant (apparently, shtupping certain demons will make you very large, and not in an eating a lot of Ben & Jerry's post breakup kind of way). Pretty awesome though, because I am amused by tall, whiny Dawn.

The final chapter in this volume was a bit boring, largely because it followed an unfamiliar character and does not yet have any meaning for the reader. Presumably, this will come later in the form of yet another foe for Buffy and the gang to kill. Otherwise, you can expect pretty standard Buffy fare, meaning completely ridiculous but in a rather nice way, even if there is someone I would rather not have seen again, especially with that person's new look.

Overall, I am happy with my reading experience; the graphic novel had the same balance between dark and silly as the show. "Great Muppety Odin" commands you to try it if you like the Buffster (29).

I'm so glad that Joss wrote Buffy comics while the show was still on, because when he decided to do a season 8 after the series had ended, he had the perfect medium all set up. And he was able to do things that might have not have come off quite as well in a television format. It's a year after the events of Season 7 and it's getting interesting. The Slayers are an army and some folks aren't too thrilled about that.This book collects the first five issues of Buffy Season 8, which includes opening arc "The Long Way Home" and "The Chain," which deals with one of the decoys chosen for a very dangerous mission. Excellent opening salvo. Can't wait to read more.

This book was on my list for a long time, and I was not disappointed when I read it. I love the idea of being able to continue a story in a universe you love after it has left it's primary media. I enjoyed the art and seeing where the characters go next. I plan to read the rest of season 8.

Takes a little getting used to- the story in comic book format is a little fast paced and scattered. But all the elements that made Joss Whedon's series so good are still there.

The part about the decoy Buffys cracked me up. For those who have seen Angel S5:E20 The Girl in Question, you know what I’m talking about. Buffy’s dreamspace is also very interesting. Hubba hubba! The illustrations are wonderful and the plot isn’t bad with a new Big Bad in the offing, but the part with Dawn and what the military guys find in Sunnydale are especially stupid. Come on! Also why there was a need for a Buffy decoy underground? I’m a tad confused about that. I am curious as to what this “Twilight” thing is though and I’m looking forward to seeing how this all plays out.

For those of us who died a little inside when the Slayer and her gang of displaced Scoobies said goodbye to Sunnydale and to the airwaves, this series is a great way to transition out of the TV series and into the notion that Whedon's masterfully crafted alternate world where the Hellmouth is only an hour's drive from Neiman Marcus continues on. The images are artworks in and of themselves and although I cannot say I was entirely thrilled with the ppremise of what came next for our indomitable heroes, I was soon drawn in, - considering this is the first time ever I have purchased or read a graphic novel with any degree of interest, that is saying something. Once again, Whedon pulls off a masterful approach to marketing and and distributing his writing on his own terms.

The art of this book grew on me. I liked the changes that the characters had gone through after the television series ended. Fun stuff.

Reviews of the next seven volumes possibly will, too.*The Long Way Home: Buffy Season 8, Volume 1 brings up back into the world of Buffy Summers and her Scooby gang. At this point they've closed the Hellmouth – and collapsed all of Sunnydale in the process. Still grieving from lost friends and lovers, the Scoobies are moving on and doing what they do best: Working from somewhere akin to any army base Buffy and most of the newly called Slayers are working at defending the world kind of like she did before, just on a much, much larger scale.Readers are thrown right into the action as we’re shown what the gang is doing –and how they’re doing it. And, oh yeah, Dawn’s a giant. (Synopses for this series are going to be super short since they’re 100-150 page comics.) Starting this was different for me since I don’t read comics- or graphic novels – but seeing new Buffy was definitely of the good. I liked that the characters did look older (since there’s supposed to have been a gap between the end of the series and the start of this eighth season. It was also nice that hings from Angel Season Five were used – whether they were built on or discredited. You do definitely need to know Buffy and Angel, the television series to fully understand what’s going on in Buffy Season 8, but tha’s who this is aimed at really – BtVS and AtS fans – so that’s understandable. A few parts were confusing to me – I had trouble understand just what was going on, etc but that could just be me not being used to the medium. The art was fantastic and it both represented the characters well and is gorgeous. I'm definitely interested in where the rest of this goes. Right now it's reading like good (beautifully illustrated) fanfiction that has some of Joss Whedon's signature whit.8/10(read first thanks to Dark Horse and NetGalley)
