Lebenslauf
1834: Hilaire Germain Edgar de Gas, genannt Degas, wird am 19. Juli in Paris in eine gutbürgerliche Bankiersfamilie hineingeboren.
1855: Nach einem Studium am Collège Louis-le-Grand tritt er an der Schule für Bildende Künste in das Atelier von Lamonthe ein, wo er Unterricht von Ingres und Flandrin erhält.
1853-1859: Er fertigt seine ersten Werke an: Selbstbildnisse und Porträts von Familienmitgliedern sowie viele Kopien von Gemälden im Louvre.
1856-1860: Um sich auf den Römischen Zeichenpreis vorzubereiten reist Degas nach Italien, wo er die Werke Florentiner Maler entdeckt und inbrünstig kopiert; außerdem fertigt er Reproduktionen von zahlreichen Altarfiguren und Fresken mit Bleistift oder Öl an. Er besucht Abendkurse in der Villa Medicis und lernt einige Maler kennen, darunter Gustav Moreau, mit dem ihm bald eine tiefe Freundschaft verbinden wird.
1858-1859: Degas beginnt die Arbeit an einem großen Gemälde à la Holbein oder Van Dyck; das Bild Die Familie Bellelli zeigt seinen Onkel, seine Tante und ihre beiden Töchter. Es ist das Meisterwerk seiner Lehrjahre.
1860: Degas malt Porträts, die an den Ingres'schen Linearismus erinnern, und historische Bilder (Semiramis baut Babylon, 1861)
1860-1862: Degas malt Pferde und beginnt sich dann für den Tanz und die Oper zu interessieren. Durch sein soziales Umfeld und seine musikalischen Freunde entdeckt er die unechte und bunte Welt der Pferderennen und das Theater. Er konzentriert sich dort auf die ausgefallenen
