      Jackie Garrett suggested a steamy story featuring a golden retriever shifter, and that sounded like so much fun. Once I’d thought about a shifter whose form was a domestic animal, I realized that they’d have problems that wild animals wouldn’t...like getting picked up by animal control.

      THIS IS COMPLETELY humiliating, Randy thought.

      It’s not my fault, his inner dog told him. You were the one who wanted to go for a walk.

      And now we’re in a kennel.

      Randy had already tried shifting. The transport kennel was too small for his human form to be comfortable, and he had been appalled to find that it was secured with a padlock he wasn’t able to open from the inside.

      So he was stuck. As a dog. In a cage. Heading for the pound.

      The beagle in the next kennel was howling obnoxiously.

      When the truck rumbled to a stop, he was frantically going over his options. He couldn’t just shift without an escape plan. He was going to have to play—literally—dumb until he had a chance to make a break for it. The back door opened, and he heard a woman’s voice.

      What do you have for me today, Shaun?

      Sweet golden, and a beagle that hasn’t shut up in an hour, Randy’s captor answered. Tried to get that husky off the back lot, but he’s a skittish one.

      Aw, the poor things, let’s get you guys checked for chips.

      Randy stood, staring in astonishment at the figure climbing into the back of the animal control truck. 

      The woman, a slight brunette with thick glasses, looked right at him. Aren’t you a beauty, she crooned.

      We are, Randy’s dog agreed slavishly. And she is, too.

      Is that...?

      Our mate, Randy’s dog said matter-of-factly. 

      Randy’s humiliation ratcheted up a notch. This was not how he had intended to meet the woman of his destiny.

      You’re certainly friendly, she said, smiling at him, and Randy realized that his tail was thumping uncontrollably against the bars of his cage.

      I should be sweeping her off her feet with poetry, taking her on a date, bringing her flowers...Randy thought in despair. And if she was going to put a collar around his neck, they should at least have talked about a safe word first. 

      She led him into the shelter while Shaun took the beagle—still
