    What Do Employers Want?

    One of the main things people want to find out before an interview is what an employer is looking for, or what they want. The natural and simple answer is: leaders who can work well as part of a team.

    In 2016, the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) released a survey on Job Outlook and over 80% of those who responded said that employers are looking for evidence of leadership skills on a person’s resume. Almost all of these people are also looking for candidates who can work on a team.

    Within the same survey, employers also said that a strong work ethic, problem-solving skills, and written communication skills are essential for a potential employee. Employers give more weight to verbal communication skills than they do quantitative or analytical skills.

    While hiring managers do look at your academic major, GPA, and extracurricular activities, leadership roles can help you to stand out amongst the other candidates.

    While in an interview, the interviewer wants to get to know you. Your resume has told them everything that they need to know about your job skills, work history, and education. You will have to answer questions based on this information, but to blow them away, you have to speak beyond what is on your resume.

    Each company has its own ‘approaching the interview’ process. Some will ask everybody the same question while others have a more open approach, allowing the conversation to flow naturally. There are a few things, as an applicant, which you can do to make yourself stand out amongst the competition. These are the things that employers are looking to see:

    Understand the Company

    The interviewer is going to want to know that you are familiar with the company. Before you sent in your resume, you should have researched the company to find out what it is that they do, how it’s structured, where it operates, and other bits of information. This information is helpful during the interview so that you can show them that you have the skills and knowledge needed for the job. They don’t want to hear generic answers to their questions; instead, tailor your response to show them how you would handle their company’s specific needs.

    It’s Yours to Lose

    Since the interviewer is looking to hire somebody who has your skills, and the process of hiring people takes up their time and takes them away from their regular duties, they typically come into the interview wanting to offer you the job. What you have to make sure you don’t do is provide them with a reason to change their minds.

    As long as you show the interviewer that you can work well with others, make sure you toot your own horn. They want to know about your success, especially those that relate to the position you are interviewing for. To make your life easier, make sure you come prepared with a few stories about things you have achieved.

    Are You Answering the Questions?

    While getting ready for your interview is excellent, and you should spend some time studying the kinds of questions that might be answered when it comes to the interview, you have to listen. Listen to what they ask and answer those questions. You don’t want to answer their question with a practiced answer that has nothing to do with what they asked.
