About this ebook

Are there guardian angels?
It’s a difficult concept to fathom.
The bible tells of the good angels of, God and the dark angels thrown out of heaven with Satan to live on earth. If they exist we can’t see or hear them.
Then there’s the Holy Spirit God sent to earth after the resurrection of Jesus. Could the Holy Spirit be a guardian angel? What exactly does a spirit do?
I don’t think it’s possible for one Holy Spirit to be a guardian angel for all the people on earth. There’s got to be another answer. I don’t know it. And, I don’t understand this guardian angel thing, either. Take this example.
In 1993 I tell of an incident where I was T-boned in the middle of an intersection by a car traveling 60 mph. An outspoken, opinionated, crusty old fart like me should have died on the spot to make room for a new baby. Not only did I live through it, but I didn’t have a scratch.
In 2018 a friend was in a similar accident. Her car was T-boned by a landscape truck. This woman was as beautiful and fragile as a butterfly. She volunteered her time tirelessly to help cancer patients. She never recovered from the accident and died the same day in the hospital.
Why does this happen? She gave her life to others and died. I would think she had a guardian angel for she was an angel herself. But instead, I went through a similar situation and lived. Do I have a guardian angel? If so, why?
Did she finish God’s will on earth? Is there something I must do before I die? Is that why I have survived 20 near death and life altering incidents?
As I search for the answer I look into my childhood when it all began. And, for convenience, I’ll let my guardian angel, Sammy, tell the story.

    PROLOGUE

    1

A white puffy cloud enveloped the guardian angels’ office complex in heaven. Michael the Archangel, Director of Operations, walked out of his office and approached a rookie guardian angel named Sammy.

Sammy, I've got something for you, Michael said, placing a folded piece of pink notepaper in Sammy’s hand.

Sammy tensed up as he looked from his hand to his boss.

Is this the dreaded pink slip? Is it over for me? No more guardian angel?

Looking up at Michael for a clue to its contents, Sammy saw only a placid expression. It made Sammy even more nervous. Michael was intimidating; with the same strong athletic build he had when God sent him to challenge the devil for the body of Moses.

In Sammy’s first performance review, Michael had expressed some displeasure with Sammy’s tendency to be easily distracted. Well aware his next assignment would be crucial to keeping his job, Sammy reluctantly parted the folded pink paper, and peeked into it. Only two words. Sammy shuddered at what it could mean. Under Michael’s watchful eye, Sammy took a closer look and saw a name, not something bad like you’re fired. He read the words out loud. Don Wooldridge, is that right?

Yes, he’s your new assignment, Michael said. "He lives on the North American continent in Davenport, Iowa, USA. He’s in the third grade at Adams Elementary school."

Third Grade? Is this going to be a lifetime assignment?

    It’s not my call, Sammy

Lowering his voice, hoping God wouldn’t overhear, Sammy whispered to Michael, Instead of investing years and years with a kid, can you change this and assign me an older client?

"Samuel!" a thunderous voice boomed out.

The whole office shook like an earthquake, and lightening streaked across the walls.

Oh no! It’s never good to hear from God.

Then the booming voice continued. I pick the assignments, and Donald is your client. He’s a troublesome boy I need you to protect until I’m ready to use him. Don’t let me down!

Sammy quivered under the intensity of God’s voice.

Gee, I don’t think I’ll do that again. He might send me to the Demon Tracking Department.

Sammy, Michael said to get his attention, Donald’s on his way home from school now. Waving his arm, Michael created a live feed on the office wall showing a boy bending down to pick up a tree branch. That’s him.

They watched Don poking the stick through a fence to make a dog bark.

Why is he doing that, Michael?

Lord knows what the boy is thinking.

That’s true. Boomed a voice from above, startling both of them.

The two boys laughed, trying to make the dog jump to see how high up the fence he could reach. Sufficiently angered, the Doberman sprang up. The boys froze as the dog’s front legs and chest hung over the top of the fence. While its hind legs frantically pawed to find enough traction, Don and Timmy ran.

They were scared to death, and pumped their arms and legs a fast as they could. When Don watched Timmy head for the trees on the boulevard, Don lost his shoe, stumbled and sprawled out onto the street. Papers scattered from his school folder and flew past him as he skidded to a stop.

    Should we help him, Michael?

    Patience Sammy, just watch.

Scrambling to get back on his feet, Don heard the panting and barking of the dog close behind him. In a panic he tried to run even faster. He could almost feel the dog’s hot breath as he ran across his front yard. Throwing open the porch screen door, Don dove onto the porch’s floor as the Doberman pounced onto the screen door, slamming it and barking furiously.

Sammy shook his head in wonder, and asked Michael, This is what I’ve got to deal with the rest of his life?

Most kids grow out of it. But I’m not sure about this one. However, it gives you time to learn your new job as he grows up. I think it’s a good fit.

    * * *

Oww! This coffee is HOT, blurted Sammy as he sat at the table in the angel’s break room. He dried his burning fingers. But, it tastes so good. It's nice to have the best of everything up here.

Sammy had been talking to no one in particular, but Colonel Kraft, sitting at the table, watched him with interest. If you wouldn't fill your cup to the brim, you wouldn’t spill it on yourself every day.

I can always count on the Colonel. After thirty years in the military he does everything by the book, with no gray areas. It’s hard to please him.

Sammy turned to see Doctor Zout enter the room. Sammy chuckled as he remembered the day he learned Doc’s given name was Maximillian Zout. It’s no wonder he prefers Doctor Zout. The Colonel had told Sammy Doc was very analytical, and as the senior guardian angel, Doc thought he could anticipate future events with cunning accuracy.

Walking toward an empty seat at the table Doctor Zout asked, Can I join you?

Please do, said the Colonel. Did you hear Sammy got a new assignment today, and will be trying to keep up with a third grader?

Yes I heard. It’s a good thing for Sammy to start with a young one. Do you know anything about your client yet? Doctor Zout asked.

I do, Sammy answered. He’s an eight year old boy and a bit of a trouble maker. A tall skinny kid, he’s at home now. That's why I came back for coffee.

So, where’d you say Don lives? Doctor Zout
