Equipment
Whether you opt to pipe using buttercream or royal icing, to get started you will need some basic equipment.
Piping tubes (tips)
Also known as nozzles and pipes, there are many piping tubes to choose from and which shape and size you select will depend on the medium you are using and the design of the piping you wish to create. Generally, however, the tubes used for buttercream tend to be much larger than those used for delicate royal iced details.
Tubes are manufactured from either plastics or metals such as nickel-plated brass and stainless steel. For best results, always use professional piping tubes and avoid ones with seams. If your budget allows, use stainless steel tubes where possible, as these do not rust or break and should last you a lifetime. Also be aware that the number series used to identify piping tubes is not standardized so you’ll find that each manufacturer has its own slightly different numbering
