The Problem...the Promise...the Program
The Problem
Memory problems are common at every stage of life, and they can impair learning, working, and relationships. For most people, occasional lapses in memory are a normal part of the aging process, not a warning sign of serious mental deterioration or the onset of dementia. Certain medical conditions can cause serious memory problems. Emotional problems, such as stress, anxiety, and depression, can make a person more forgetful and can be mistaken for dementia.
Dementia describes a group of symptoms affecting memory, thinking and social abilities enough to interfere with your daily life. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia in older adults. If you are 85, you have a 50-percent chance of being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
The Promise
Even if you have trouble remembering now, it doesn’t mean you always will. You can have a better memory today by engaging in the Memory Rescue: BRIGHT MINDS program. This program will help you sharpen your memory, reverse brain aging, and decrease your risk of developing Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
The Program
Memory Rescue is based on a simple idea: The best way to sharpen your memory, reverse brain aging, and prevent Alzheimer’s disease is to eliminate, prevent, and treat all the risk factors that affect your brain. This book teaches you the common reasons for memory loss and helps you identify the specific factors affecting your brain health. It also provides you with a step-by-step approach to enhance your memory and keep it healthy for a lifetime.
You will learn:
How to assess your brain regularly to identify issues early.
How to test for each of the risk factors.
Strategies to reduce or eliminate avoidable risks through diet and exercise.
Innovative strategies to enhance brain function.
Part 1
Memory Is Life
Chapter 1
A Breakthrough Approach to Memory Issues, Aging, and Alzheimer’s
Many doctors diagnose memory problems in their patients by classifying their cognitive functions into four categories:
Normal: Individuals with no biological markers (plaques) or measurable cognitive impairments.
Preclinical: Individuals with biological markers but no measurable cognitive impairments.
Mild cognitive impairment (MCI): Patients with salient biological markers and measurable cognitive deficits.
Alzheimer’s disease: Patients have biological markers and measurable cognitive deficits that are interfering with function.
The problem with this approach is that your brain may have already begun to deteriorate decades before symptoms develop. The brain of a person diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 59 likely started to deteriorate when that person turned 30. A UCLA study found that 95 percent of people with Alzheimer’s are not diagnosed until they are in the moderate-to-severe stages of the disorder.
Memory loss can arise from many conditions, including normal aging, hormone imbalance, side effects from medication, stroke, and Alzheimer’s disease. However, because of the fear of discovering that Alzheimer’s might have caused their memory loss, many people avoid or postpone getting tested. Such delays prevent the treatment of easily addressed conditions and allow illnesses like Alzheimer’s to affect more areas of the brain, making it harder to treat. If you are struggling with your memory, even if it seems inconsequential, now is the time to get serious about your brain’s health.
A Breakthrough Concept: Memory Rescue
Even if you have trouble remembering now, it doesn’t mean you always will. You can have a better memory today by engaging in the Memory Rescue: BRIGHT MINDS program. This program will help you sharpen your memory, reverse brain aging, and decrease your risk of developing Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
Memory Rescue teaches you the most common reasons for memory loss and helps you identify the specific factors affecting your brain health. BRIGHT MINDS is the mnemonic for these risk factors.
B—Blood flow: hypertension, stroke, cardiovascular disease, cholesterol problems, erectile dysfunction, lack of exercise.
R—Retirement/Aging: aging and lack of new learning.
I—Inflammation: gum disease, low levels of omega-3 fatty acids.
G—Genetics: family members with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or other forms of dementia.
H—Head Trauma: a history of head injuries.
T—Toxins: substance abuse, exposure to toxins in the environment.
M—Mental health: chronic stress, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia.
I—Immunity/Infection Issues: chronic fatigue syndrome, autoimmune issues, untreated infections.
N—Neurohormone deficiencies: low levels of
