C H Clepitt

C H Clepitt has a Master’s Degree in English Literature from the University of the West of England. As their Bachelor’s Degree was in Drama, and their Master’s Dissertation focused on little known 18th Century playwright Susannah Centlivre, Clepitt’s novels are extremely dialogue driven, and it has often been observed that they would translate well to the screen.Since graduating in 2007, Clepitt gained experience in community and music journalism, before establishing satirical news website, Newsnibbles in 2010. In 2011 they published A Reason to Stay, which follows the adventures of disillusioned retail manager, Stephen, as he is thrust into village life and the world of AmDram. Clepitt’s feminist fantasy, The Book of Abisan not only crosses worlds, but confuses genres, and has been described as a crime drama with magic. Not liking labels, Clepitt has often said they don't like the way that choosing a genre forces you to put your book into a specific little box, and instead prefers to distort the readers’ expectations and keep them guessing. Most recently Clepitt's Magic Mirror collection does just that, retelling classic fairy tales as a combination of historical fiction, magical fantasy, espionage and crime drama, all with a queer twist!

Act 1, Scene 1: The Storm

You’ll never work in this town again! Ramsey screamed in Sian’s face.  His breath smelled of tobacco, alcohol, and that sort of sour smell of someone who just doesn’t care about their personal hygiene enough to wash or clean their teeth regularly. The yellowing stains spreading like a fungus from the armpits of his shirt sleeves went to support this theory.  Beads of sweat were forming on his bald head, and his face was the colour of a beetroot from the exertion of bellowing so loudly.

Sian bit her lip. She wasn’t upset by this oversized toddler having a tantrum, it was more the unfairness that she knew what he was saying was true.  She’d spent months researching and gathering evidence about the poor quality of the housing he was providing, the unsafe conditions he was forcing his tenants to live in, the exorbitant rates he was charging them for the privilege.  He’d been found guilty of negligence and given an inconsequential fine. And now he was louder and more obnoxious than ever, and he was going to throw all the money necessary at ensuring she never worked as a journalist again.

Think of it as an opportunity, her twin brother Seb told her over the video chat that night. He was a photojournalist and for the past two years had been living on an island cataloguing its nature for a series of articles in an international magazine. You’re too good for that small town shitty press, anyway. Get out and work somewhere you have a chance of making it big. Investigating slumlords is never gunna get you to the big time!

I suppose I could join you on the island? she teased. It’s not like I have anything holding me here, now.

Of course! I’ll buy you a ticket now, he smiled. I have to go into the jungle for a few days - there’s a particular breed of…  The screen began to crackle, and then the picture disappeared.

Seb? Sian banged the laptop, as though that would make the slightest
