- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This anthology includes a wide range of styles and genres, so I didn't expect every story to click. But plenty of them did. Three stories in a row were realistic current day, then supernatural horror, then SF (with hoverbikes!). I liked all of them.
Conceptually, this reminds me of the 2008 anthology "She's such a geek!" That was nonfiction, but it was a collection of very personal voices, writing from their geek experiences. "Unbroken" is fiction including disabilities by authors with disabilities.
Give it a try and find some new perspectives and new authors to follow. And ask your library to get it for the teen section. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5diverse teen short stories (realistic, fantasy/sci-fi - ethnically diverse, differently-abled characters, mental health, LGBTQA interest)
some stories resonate better than others, but you can choose what you like and skip the others. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I mistakenly expected they’d all be f/sf and was disappointed in that expectation with several romance/finding the self stories that were fine but not my thing. The best story was by William Alexander, a fantasy about a teen whose chronic pain fuels his magic and who accidentally created a Richard III out of his theater activities—the stakes are just high enough for some tension while allowing the story to focus on the teen’s relationship with his powers, his dead grandfather, and his maybe-girlfriend who might or might not be ready for the truth about him. I’ll be looking for Alexander’s other stuff. The other protagonists have a variety of disabilities, including vision impairment, schizophrenia, an anxiety disorder, and mobility impairments. No disability is “cured,” though the girl with the anxiety disorder does beat it back to take part in fighting off a planetary invasion.
