About this ebook

This book brings to light how the Father sees us with scriptural references and how we are to respond to the Father’s heart for us. This book takes us from just embracing who we are in Him to assuming the responsibility of a son based on love and not necessarily duty.

The revelation of our identity in Christ should be the foundation of all discipleship program for new believers in Christ and one of the key steps in ministering to those who are students of inner healing and the basis of follow-up after freedom sessions with people. The concept and revelation of our identity in Christ is crucial in developing a proper relationship with God our Father.

Jesus came to model sonship. The first Adam (also known as a son of God), we never knew him when he was without sin and hence, cannot model on him however the last Adam came (known as the Son of God), we knew Him without sin and He modelled sonship in all forms that He might become our perfect example of what a son should look like.

Based on our identity in Christ and our maturity in the same, we can now assume the responsibility of sonship. In the natural, the level of maturity of a son will determine the level of responsibility given to that son. The same is applicable in the kingdom of God. Your level of maturity in your sonship will determine the level of responsibility the Father can commit to you. This book is not just about affirming our identity in Christ but also challenges us on the responsibility of sonship.

This book empowers you to overcome the works of darkness. 1 John 3:8 talks of the Son of God was manifested to destroy the works of the devil and as you assume and embrace your sonship, you will equally do the same, that is, destroy the works of the devil in your daily life.

The world is waiting for the manifestation of the sons of God. It is time to arise into what God has made you to be. I celebrate the you that emerges after absorbing the truth of God that comes from the words in this book.

May this book enable you live the victorious life you have been designed to live; may it enable you rise up to purpose and destiny in the kingdom of God and may it create a ripple effect on all those in whom you come in contact with.

Embrace Your Identity in Christ - Niyi Olujobi

    Introduction

This book brings to light how the Father sees us with scriptural references and how we are to respond to the Father’s heart for us. This book takes us from just embracing who we are in Him to assuming the responsibility of a son based on love and not necessarily duty.

The revelation of our identity in Christ should be the foundation of all discipleship program for new believers in Christ and one of the key steps in ministering to those who are students of inner healing and the basis of follow-up after freedom sessions with people. The concept and revelation of our identity in Christ is crucial in developing a proper relationship with God our Father.

As I look into scriptures to illustrate this concept of identity, the perfect example I could pick is the story of Jesus’ baptism. Jesus had been born through the virgin-birth and we knew nothing about the life of Jesus until He was about 12 years old where He was about His Father’s business. This statement from Jesus, even at age 12, showed the understanding that Jesus had about His relationship with God – the Father, responsibility of sonship and the concept of family.

We heard nothing more about the formative years of Jesus in scripture until the time of His baptism.

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And John tried to prevent Him, saying, I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me? But Jesus answered and said to him, Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he allowed Him. When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

    (Matthew 3:13-17)

The bible records that Jesus came from Galilee to John that He may be baptised. Despite John’s reluctance, he eventually agreed based on the insistence of Jesus. When Jesus was baptised and He came out from the water, God – the Father decides to affirm His Son. The Father said:

    1. This is Mine:

The Father is saying this Person is Mine. I accept Him and He belongs to Me. I believe God is not just saying this about Jesus, but He is saying the same about you and I. This illustrates how God sees us. This illustrates the fact that we are not just a number; we are not just one of many people on earth, but we are individually His. We belong to God just as Jesus belonged to Him.

Jesus reiterated the same in His prayer in John 17:

I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours.

    (John 17:9)

Jesus said: …They are Yours. Just like Jesus belongs to the Father; we are as well. We belong to the Father.

    2. This is My Loved One:

The Father is not just saying Jesus (as a Son) is His but used the phrase beloved – someone dearly loved. God the Father is not just saying this to Jesus but to you and I as well. We are the beloved of God.

This book will teach us on the love of the Father and how to receive His love. We can only give what we have truly received. If we have received the love of the Father, we would be able to give the same to our world. I love the way John wrote and affirms this in 1 John 3:1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God!...

The subject of our identity and our walk in it will be determined by our ability to receive the Father’s love.

    3. This is My beloved Son:

The Father is affirming the sonship of Jesus. The Father is saying: This is My Son! It is just that simple. In the same manner in which the Father is affirming Jesus as His Son, He is also affirming you and I as His sons.

The Father sees us as sons and not slaves, objects or things. We are sons. Our belief in the finished work on the cross affirms that. John said:

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

    (John 1:12-13 emphasis mine)

So far as we have received Him (Jesus), the Father has given us the right to be children (sons) of God. We are therefore, no longer born of blood, nor by the will of the flesh, nor by the will of man but by the will of God – the Father.

The point is this: We are the beloved sons of God. The Father loves you just as much as He loved Jesus and you are His son.

This has nothing to do with gender. We are all sons of God – male and female.

    4. This is My Son Who pleases Me

The Father is also stating that this is His Son who pleases Him. We have to take note that Jesus had not fulfilled His assignment on earth; He had not performed a single miracle or healed any sick person. He had literarily done nothing but appear for His baptism and the Father is already pleased.

God – the Father is equally pleased with you and I. He is not pleased because of what we do but who we are in Him. He is pleased because we are His sons.

    5. The concept of Family.

By the language of the Father, we are being introduced to the concept of family. The words love, son and the revelation of Himself as a Father welcomes us to the revelation of the kingdom of God as a family.

As we embrace our identity, we have to see ourselves as part of a family loved equally by our Father who is in Heaven. To claim that we have assumed your identity as sons of God to the detriment of another or without love for others reveals that we are claiming a lie.

Jesus (our model for sonship) received the love of the Father and hence, can give love and loved others therefore, the evidence of our receiving the revelation of our identity in Christ would be our love for other members of the family. Mathew 12:46-50 shows us how to define family within the kingdom of God.

For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

    (Hebrews 2:10)

This verse reveals Jesus as a Son bringing other sons in. That is what family do.

This book brings to light how the Father sees us with scriptural references and how we are to respond to the Father’s heart for us. This book takes us from just embracing who we are in Him to assuming the responsibility of a son based on love and not necessarily duty.

    Who Am I?

The concept of identity cannot be overstated. The quest to know who we are has led many to steep themselves in ungodly mythologies, digging into family histories and ancestry just to discover why they don’t fit in. In fact, such questions have plagued mankind for generations, and it still occurs today.

We can only live in the context of our identity to the extent that we know who we are in Christ.

To become a Christian and, therefore, a child of God, you will have to be reborn, that is, another birth (a spiritual birth) after your original birth into this world. This rebirth process is usually referred to as giving or surrendering your life to Christ or being born-again or a conversion.

To become a member of God’s family, you will have to be born of God:

But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

    (John 1:12–13)

The context of these two verses assures us that as many receive Christ into their lives, God gives them the right to become children of God—who are supernaturally born of God (hence the term born-again or reborn).

Every time I read these verses, I rejoice. It tells us a lot about who we really are as people. In the King James Version of the Bible, it says to them He gave Power to become children of God. The root word is exousia, which means authority. If we receive Him, we have the authority to call ourselves children of God and become what He wants us to be. It’s important to realize that we can boldly declare it because of the authority God has given to us.

The word sons or children comes from the root word teknon, which means a child above the age of a toddler but not yet the age of an adolescent. We thus have the right and authority to become the child of God. Sometimes we don’t have to act so grown-up. Before God
