In the otherwise thickly shadowed room, the bluish glow of the computer reflected in Mordred's eyes like the eye-shine of a cat. He tapped away at his keyboard, watching the words come into being before him. They told a narrative he had been planning for quite some time - he'd spent quite a while ruminating on background details before he got stuck in.

Not that it felt like writing; it felt like he was just a passenger along for the ride. The prose floated from his mind and onto the screen, his fingers a blur, almost merging with their own shadows on the keys. He was just a vessel for the will of creativity to manifest.

He didn't think in terms of words when he was in the moment. He just watched the characters play out their tragedies before him and felt the words, like a master of jazz feeling the music spontaneously taking form.

This was the moment - this was exactly the moment where he was born to be. This is what he was, and this is what he did. The scene before him escalated, the characters' emotions plain from the movement and light. One of them turned and-

Shaking his head, he let out an annoyed groan and kept on writing. It took a while to get going again. His mind sputtered and whirred like a car trying to start on a cold day. Finally, the words began to flow like a stream, escalating to a raging torrent, spurred on by a downpour-

Mordred halted mid-word. He locked his computer and stepped into the dark. At the front door of his apartment, he took a deep breath and held it, listening closely.

    Silence.

His muscles tensed as he placed his hand over the handle and lock. A moment's hesitation. He unlocked the door with a click and looked out, but there was nothing but darkness. The hallway seemed to stretch into infinity, the other end invisible in the darkness.

    Nothing.

He closed the door and locked it,
