 TAKES 1HR 25MIN SERVES 12-14

375g butter, softened 375g caster sugar 375g self-raising flour 2 eggs 2tbsp milk 3-6tsp sprinkles FOR THE DECORATION 250g unsalted butter 500g icing sugar Few drops of vanilla extract 4 tubes Smarties 450g mini Smarties

1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/Fan 160°C/Gas 4. Cream together the butter and sugar. Add the flour, eggs and milk, and beat until smooth. Mix in the sprinkles, then divide between three greased, lined and floured 20cm round cake tins.

2 Bake the sponges for 25-35min or until they’re firm to touch and a skewer inserted comes out clean.

3 Remove from oven and leave to cool in the tin for 5-10min. Move to a wire rack to cool completely.

4 Trim the tops of two sponges to level them. With a 6-7cm round cutter, stamp out a hole from the centre of
