This one is much better than “the year of me”. There are some good prompts in this book, and there’s a useful chapter towards the end of the book.

Welcome

Welcome to The Year of You for Mothers! This guided daily journal is an opportunity to spend a few minutes in reflection each day. It’s also a chance to spend time with yourself and maintain (or regain) that important connection with the areas of your life that can get pushed outside your consciousness by the daily whirlwind of looking after and caring for young people.

As a mother of two young kids, I’m so glad I chose parenthood. At the same time, you probably don’t need me to tell you it’s the ultimate exercise in personal growth. However you divide responsibilities in your household, there’s a non-stop merry-go-round of practical life that comes with young children: doing laundry, preparing and cleaning up food (so much food…), changing clothes, nappies (diapers, if you’re across the pond), clothes again, getting out of the house, another change of clothes, appointments, and so much more. As children grow older, the merry-go-round shifts and the elements associated with young childhood give way to different—but usually no less consuming—commitments, challenges, and demands. Layered underneath all of this, there are also the emotional extremes. The high highs and the low lows. The overwhelming responsibility mixed with unbridled joy, the frustration mixed with gratitude, the uncertainty, the love, the exhaustion, the elation, the inexplicably miraculous, the plain gross, the constant change and adaptation.

I need time to recharge and reflect to be the person I want to be, both for my kids and in life overall, and I know I’m not alone with this. The emotional demands and rewards of motherhood are much easier to process when we’re present, grounded, and connected to ourselves. Yet, this is something that easily gets lost in the hurricane of everyday life. Having journaled for many years pre-children, I’ve found my practice has changed significantly since I became a mother. Now, brevity is key and I appreciate not having to think too hard about where to start, so prompts are useful too!

As I was researching this book, I found that most of the journals that exist for mothers are designed for them to share with their children (usually daughters). While I see the sentimental value in this and think it’s a lovely exercise, this journal is different. I believe it’s important for you to have a place that is private and yours only, where you can write unreservedly about your thoughts and feelings
