Birth of the Birds - Barry Bowe

    1 - Misconception

A misconception exists in the minds of some Eagles fans about the Eagles being a continuation of the Frankford Yellow Jackets.

    But that’s not the case.

The Yellow Jackets began playing in the NFL in 1924. But the economic fallout from 1929’s Great Depression created fiscal hardships that the owners of the Yellow Jackets couldn’t overcome. Thus the team ceased operations at the end of the 1931 season.

Nearly two years passed without an NFL team in Philadelphia.

On July 9, 1933, the NFL awarded a franchise to a pair of local investors. They were lifelong friends who grew up on the right side of the tracks:

1 - De Benneville Bert Bell

2 - James Ludlow Lud Wray

To make it clear, Bert Bell and Lud Wray did not buy the defunct Frankford Yellow Jackets. They bought a new franchise that they named the Philadelphia Eagles.

Furthermore, because the Yellow Jackets had been dormant for a full season, Bert Bell and Lud Wray were allowed to disavow any association with the old Yellow Jackets ─ which they did. But the misconception arose because of four reasons:

1 - The entry fee awarded the Eagles the rights to the former Yellow Jackets players.

2 - Lud Wray played for the Yellow Jackets.

3 - Art Koeninger, a center, also played for the Yellow Jackets.

    4 - Strapped
