Japanese decluttering expert Maria Kondo advises discarding all items in your life that don’t “spark joy”. She recommends individually picking up each item in your home and staring at it closely, before asking yourself whether the item in question brings you joy or not. She writes, “Keep only those things that speak to your heart. Then take the plunge and discard all the rest.” By doing this, she says, “you can reset your life”.

For the many who’ve followed Kondo’s hardline approach to home clutter, the result can be startlingly bare. Empty cupboards, drawers, and bookshelves screaming to be filled with cups, and bowls, and life’s ‘necessities’. An exercise
