Introduction
I have just recently begun to explore meditation. If you were to ask me why I’m not sure that I could give you an exact reason. You see, I have always been intrigued by things. Ancient worlds, for instance. For instance, a bucket list item of mine is to go to Egypt and crawl around the pyramids, look at ancient texts, and see things that are literally thousands of years old.
Right now, I watch every documentary I can find in ancient Egypt, China and all the old cultures of the world. Why not? They have been around a lot longer than we have, right? They must have something that works for them, not only as a civilization but also for each individual person. Would it not be prudent to look into these things?
Second, on my list of intriguing thoughts are the ancient medicinal arts from China. This field is a big one, but everything about this draws me like metal to a magnet. Whether it is the Yen and Yang theory. The belief that diseases and disorders are caused by hot and cold areas of the body. All the unusual things (at least unusual by contemporary medical standards) which are used to treat the illness that people have been plagued with for centuries.
Surprisingly, with what research that I have completed, some of these old Chinese ways of treating disease actually work. Even some modern medicine practitioners are using them as an alternative means of treating diseases today.
Perhaps my love for the old ways harkens back to my own heritage. My great-grandmother was a full-blooded Native American from the Cherokee Clan. Before her passing, and when I was still fairly young myself, she would tell me stories of how the healers treated people with a combination of spiritual rituals and herbs. I wish I had been smarter and actually wrote down some of the things she had told me. But, as they say, youth is wasted on the young. Now, all I have are a few vague memories of what she told me and the hunger to know more.
So, it seems a natural progression, at least for me, to start looking at other spiritual, sometimes mystical in nature, theories and practices. I’ve started doing yoga, and by extension meditation. It makes sense to me that the two go together. Mind and body. Mind, body, and soul, if you will, make you what you are.
As I say, this is a progression for me. It is a form of circular thinking, perhaps. One thing leads to another, and another, and another, until you end up where you're started from. For me, it was I wanted to be healthier and less stressed. I began, as most people do, with what I was doing wrong.
Too much junk food. Too much soda and other sugar-filled drinks. I changed my diet to home cooked veggies and the like, switched to drinking more water. The next was the lack of exercise, so I gradually increased my activity, but due to an accident a few years ago, I found I could not exercise at the intensity I would have like too.
Here’s where the yoga came in. It was in a recent Yoga class that the instructor began discussing meditation and the effects it can have on the mind, body, and soul.
Being new, I wasn’t good at meditation as some of the more experienced people there, but even so, I was amazed at how my fledgling attempt at meditation made me feel. I left the class feeling more relaxed than I had in a long time. My stress level was way down, and I even found myself smiling at nothing when I walked out the door. It was just that feeling of being whole, being stress-free and content, I suppose.
Being the inquisitive type, and a scholar of sorts, I began researching meditation. I suppose my efforts were in direct opposition with the act of meditation itself, for when I do research, it is with a focus drive that sometimes raises my stress level to higher and higher highs. Yet, I felt compelled to do so.
Also having a medical background, I began where I always begin. With the body. With the brain. How it works. What happens when it is overloaded? What can a person do to get back on track, live the life of wellness we all desire. How meditation can help get us there.
We all have emotions, feelings and other
