About China Doll

Alia Rose has the perfect life — or so it seems. She’s young, she’s beautiful, she has a hot boyfriend who thinks she hung the moon, and she recently started a promising career. There’s just one problem. Since her teens, Alia has had a secret obsession with the rock star Sam Gables, multi-Grammy winner and noted heartthrob.

Despite pining for this unattainable superstar for years, Alia has kept her admittedly crazy fantasies to herself. That is, until a girls’ trip to New Orleans, too much tequila, and a freaky bar called Killer’s Basement collide to bring her face-to-face with her idol.

He’s smitten, and she quickly understands that her life will never be the same. After a dizzying night — and a dose of unwanted social-media notoriety — Sam and Alia embark on a highly unusual courtship.

Alia finds out that falling in love with an eccentric rock star isn’t even close to what she expected. And despite his money and fame, Sam Gables soon comes to realize that he can learn a few lessons about life and love from the mysterious, practical, and very alluring Alia.

Since her teens, twenty-eight-year-old Alia Rose has nursed a secret obsession with the gorgeous, tortured rock star Sam Gables. Despite finishing her undergraduate degree and dental school, starting her career, and being in a relationship with someone else, Alia can never seem to shake Sam loose from her mind and heart.

Looking forward to a fun weekend of letting her hair down, Alia sets off for New Orleans with her carefree friend Elaine. Soon after arriving in town, they head out to Bourbon Street for a drink — which turns into many drinks and a trip to the dark underground bar Killer’s Basement.

Alia knows from press reports that Sam Gables has recently moved to the city, but she never expected to see him in person. However, fate and tequila have a different idea, and soon Alia is walking out of the bar and into the unknown with her idol.

Obsession (Part 1) - Myranda Patterson

    Obsession

Sam Gables didn’t want to go onstage, and it was my fault.

I’d been obsessed with him for a long time, since I was fourteen years old. I first saw his face in 2005, on page 26 of Rolling Stone magazine. It was a small article about a young band, the Blue Tones, that had gotten hot on the college-club circuit.

The twenty-two-year-old lead singer was heavily influenced by Elvis — evidenced by the jet-black hair, ecstasy-inducing squeal and involuntary hip action onstage. But he certainly had his own mojo: the crazy hairstyle that seemed to go every which way and the eyes ringed in heavy black eyeliner were clearly not out of the ’50s.

I clipped the Rolling Stone article and started a file that would expand over the years as my obsession with Sam Gables grew. He didn’t know I existed, of course, and I never would’ve intentionally done anything to change that.

I certainly wasn’t the type to become a groupie or follow some rock
