About the Author

Introduction

For decades, scientists have believed that cancer is a genetic disease caused by DNA mutations. The War on Cancer started by President Nixon in 1971 has been a miserable failure. Dr. Joseph Mercola believes that we are losing the war because scientists are chasing a flawed paradigm. Most adult cancers are not a disease of damaged DNA, but rather one of defective metabolism.

Mitochondria are the powerhouses of your cells. When large numbers of mitochondria in your body stop functioning properly, you’re vulnerable to cancer and other chronic diseases.

The food you eat directly affects your mitochondria. If you eat foods that boost the health of your mitochondria, you are less likely to suffer from metabolic dysfunctions that can cause cancer and chronic diseases.

Part I of this book explains how your body works at a biological and molecular level, and what’s causing your metabolism to go haywire. It will describe what foods to eat and how to keep tabs on your own iron levels to help your mitochondria thrive. Part II of the book will detail the guidelines for starting the Mitochondrial Metabolic Therapy (MMT).

Rescuing Your Metabolism

Chapter 1

The Truth About Mitochondria, Free Radicals, and Dietary Fats

Every cell in your body needs a continuous supply of energy. Mitochondria are organelles that produce energy for your cells. Cells metabolically active—such as those in the brain, liver, heart, kidneys, and muscles—have more mitochondria than others.

In generating energy for the cells, your mitochondria also produce a form of free radicals called reactive oxygen species (ROS). Free radicals are molecules that contain oxygen atoms with an odd number of electrons. Because of the unpaired electrons, free radicals are highly unstable. Under normal conditions, free radicals play many valuable roles in your body to regulate cellular functions. However, excessive free radicals can start a chain reaction that can damage your DNA. They react with cellular components, making the cell membranes brittle and leaky, leading to tissue degradation, which increases your risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.
