Pulling the tray from the oven, I piled two plates high with chicken and a mound of greasy chips, and added a dollop of ketchup. I couldn’t wait to tuck in and neither could my partner, Beth, then 36. As soon as we’d finished, we headed to the sofa. ‘Shall we open the sweets?’ I suggested. ‘Oh, go on then,’ Beth smiled. And as we sat there, watching TV, we grazed on the sweets and chocolate. It was August 2018 – and for Beth and me, this was standard.
