About this ebook

Nothing seems to go right in Jeff’s life. He’s clumsy, and women and men alike act like he’s a joke. So how’s he supposed to get the object of his affections, his coworker Tessa, to go out with him?
While he might just sit out his life and let it pass him by (it’s better than suffering more embarrassment and disappointment), his best friend Marc is always there to push him to go for his dreams, including the one of being with Tessa. When he actually gets her to go out with him, everything goes wrong, over and over again — no matter how hard he tries. How is he supposed to keep the girl of his dreams? And if he can’t, how can he possibly live without her?

Hopeless in Love - Sharon Therien

    Hopeless in Love

Jeff looked at Tessa for the four-hundredth time since arriving at this get-together an hour ago.

When are you gonna ask her out already? asked his friend Marc. You’re practically in love with her. Are you just gonna stare at her forever? The two of them were off to the side at a gathering of their coworkers. They all worked together at a bagel café, where they served bagel sandwiches, coffee, and smoothies.

I don’t know… I’m working my way up to it. But I don’t really want to get my hopes up.

This is getting ridiculous, Marc muttered to him. It’s already been months. How long’s it gonna take you? You’ve just gotta jump in the deep end. Stop thinking, and just do it.

Jeff looked at Tessa; her beautiful smooth brown skin against her red-orange top made him think of a glorious sunset. They had shared pleasantries a million times at work and these after-work parties. But recently, since he’d started thinking about asking her out, without being sure of how she would respond, he had become as nervous around her as he’d been when they had first met.

He’d been working at the café for about a year before she was hired. On their first day working together, the sight of her had made him stumble over his words and seem like a fool. By the slight smirk she’d worn throughout their interactions, he knew she’d been inwardly laughing at him. But what else was new? All of his coworkers laughed at his awkwardness and clumsiness.

He had been nervous around her for weeks, until everything had changed one day. On Saint Patrick’s Day he had pinned a big plastic four-leaf clover to his work apron. He almost hadn’t worn it because he didn’t want to look like a fool, but before he headed out the door on his way to work, he had put it back on. He’d decided there was no harm in being festive, and he always liked to celebrate his Irish side, since it made up about half of his European and British ancestry.

Tessa saw him and lit up. Hey, I love your pin! Happy Saint Patrick’s Day!

He beamed, inwardly thanking himself for wearing the pin after all. But he also wished he had one of those Kiss me, I’m Irish pins, because you never knew if it might work. He cleared his wayward thoughts and responded, Thanks! I had to wear it — I’m half Irish!

    No way, me too!

Really? What else are you? ’cause you have the most beautiful mix of things I’ve ever seen. Did I really just say that out loud?

She paused, surprised. Uhh… my dad’s Cuban; it’s my mom that’s Irish…there may be a little sprinkling of a couple of other things in there.

Now he knew the background behind her burnt-sienna-colored hair and her beautiful medium-brown skin that he forever had the urge to touch. He imagined running his fingers through her hair, taking her head into his hands, and kissing her full lips, then leaning back to admire the light brown of her eyes and stroke the subtle freckles you could barely see against her sun-kissed cheeks.

The cat’s out of the bag that I find her attractive, so I might as well stick to my guns. Oh, okay. Well, like I said, it’s a good combo.

    Thanks.

He tried to shift the mood. But anyway… I think my Irish side is why I’m so pale! Look, I’m practically see-through. He turned his arm over to display the blue veins showing through. Oh good, she’s smiling.

She added, Yeah, and you have all those freckles and some red streaks in your hair.
